Good morning, afternoon, evening, depending where in the world you are!
----------------------------------------I have a question, I can't see one similar thats been asked before. I've just upgraded my PC to a Quad Core. Upon re-installing the BOINC agent, it's now crunching through 4 projects simultaneously. Is it possible to opt for it to only work on 1 Project unit at a time? Many thanks! ![]() |

That's possible by restricting the number of working processors in the device manager of WCG (My Grid --> Device Manager --> Device Profiles --> Advanced Options --> Processor Usage).
----------------------------------------But then you only use one quarter of the crunching power of your PC. ![]() ![]() Ask not what the world can do for you - ask what you can do for the world. |

Thank you Dieter for the advice! :)
----------------------------------------I know I'm only using a small part of the CPU power now, but I need the PC for other things :( I have the same CPU as you, Q6600, which I have overclocked to 3GHz. ![]() |

I've just upgraded my PC to a Quad Core. Upon re-installing the BOINC agent, it's now crunching through 4 projects simultaneously. Some of us only wish. I have an AMD X2 and BOINC is running at 100% 24/7 in two cores. As for "needing the computer for other things", it's not one or the other. BOINC is designed to run at lowest priority. If I do something else, BOINC backs off to part of the CPU or quits entirely while the other task is running. When the other task finishes, BOINC resumes at 100%. Try it. On the other hand, BOINC does not get along well with intensive games or video editing. In that case, it should be snoozed or exited for the duration. With all of that said, BOINC allows you to pick the number of cores you wish to use as mentioned above. In a laptop, there could be a heat issue, not noticeable in desktops due to better air flow. Either the BOINC throttle or less cores is helpful.
