Hi Folks,
I so much want to contribute to the WCG but it's becoming progressively more difficult for me to make a useful contribution. I'm saying this because the latest DDD-T WU that has just come my direction is estimated at 52 hrs to completion and the deadline is 2 weeks from today. I know now that I will not be able to meet the deadline. It seems to me that, unless you're running a quad-core Q6600 with oodles of RAM, those of us with a mere Pentium 4 at 1800MHz and 1GB of RAM are being squeezed out of this valuable work. Why are the DDD-T WUs becoming so huge? It's only a few weeks ago that I could always rely on DDD-T as a fallback with WU's of a few hours. I need some encouragement. JPC |

Given the speed of your computer, that estimate sounds unlikely. Still, 2 weeks is more than generous to complete a mere 52 hours of computation. That's less than 4 hours per day.
Before you despair, check the actual time the work unit takes to complete. When work unit sizes change, the estimates can be whacky for a while. |

I need some encouragement. I wish the following will do... I have a Pentium 4 2.4 GHz running DDDT. 6 completed DDDT WUs are still visible in My Results, ranging from 10.23 to 13.10 hours. That should be more or less equivalent to 14 and 17.5 hours on your machine. With your PC switched on 1.5 hour per day you should be safe about deadlines. Cheers. Jean. |

Thanks, folks!
It may have been Didactylos that recently said 'welcome to the world of nondeterminism' in response to my questions about Time Elapsed, Time Remaining and Percentage Complete. Well, I think I've fallen prey to that once again. Those figures are just so completely misleading. It certainly is true to say that "When work unit sizes change, the estimates can be whacky for a while". It's now looking as though this DDD-T WU should be completed in 17hrs - hardly the 52 hours that were originally estimated! I'm now feeling encouraged. Thanks everybody. JPC |

JPC, I am glad that we convinced you and that my estimate was not too wrong. Now that you have a more precise idea of what a DDDT WU takes in your PC I suggest that you simply ignore Boinc's estimates until it comes closer to reality. Boinc learns with every WU that you return. One problem is that with longer units not many are returned, so it takes longer to learn! In the case of my Pentium which returns about 2 units a day it is already much closer: between 14 and 15 hours for an average 12.5 hours. Good crunching! Jean. |
