He re are the specs on my new rig. Case ( CoolerMaster CM 690 Gaming Tower Case w/420W Power Supply Black ) Case Lighting ( None ) Power Supply ( 750 Watt -- [$40 OFF Mail-In Rebate] Thermaltake Toughpower W0117RU Power Supply Quad SLI Ready ) Processor ( [=== Quad Core ===] Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600 (4x 2.4GHz/8MB L2 Cache/1066FSB) ) Processor Cooling ( [$10 OFF Mail-In Rebate] [=== Silent ===] Thermaltake V1 CPU Cooling Fan System Kit Silent & Overclocking Proof = Maximum cooling efficiency for quietness and performance ) Motherboard ( [===Support QX9650===] Asus P5K Premium/WiFi-AP Intel P35 CrossFire Chipset w/7.1 Sound, Gb LAN, S-ATA Raid, USB 2.0, IEEE-1394 Dual PCI-E MB ) Memory ( 2048MB [1024MB X2] DDR2-800 PC6400 Memory Module Corsair-Value or Major Brand ) Video Card ( NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT 512MB w/DVI + TV Out Video ) Video Card Brand ( Major Brand Powered by NVIDIA ) Hard Drive ( 250 GB HARD DRIVE [Serial-ATA-II, 3Gb, 7200 RPM, 8M Cache] ) 2nd Hard Drive ( 250 GB HARD DRIVE [Serial-ATA-II, 3Gb, 7200 RPM, 8M Cache] ) External Hard Drives [USB 2.0/eSATA] ( None ) CD/DVD Drive ( 16x DVD-ROM Drive Black ) CD-RW/DVD-RW Drive ( [** Special !!! ***] 20X Dual Format/Double Layer DVD±R/±RW + CD-R/RW Drive Black ) Sound Card ( 3D Premium Surround Sound Onboard ) Speaker System ( 600W PMPO 3 PCS Super Bass Subwoofer Speaker System ) Network Card ( Onboard LAN Network (Gb or 10/100) ) Floppy Drive ( None ) Monitor ( None ) 2nd Monitor ( None ) Keyboard ( PS/2 104 Key Windows 98 Keyboard Beige ) Mouse ( Microsoft Optical Intelli-Mouse 5-Button Beige ) Meter Display ( Thermal Temperature LCD Display Black ) Flash Media Reader/Writer ( 12-In-1 Internal Flash Media Card Reader/Writer Black ) Operation System ( MS Windows XP Professional w/ Service Pack 2 ) It should be up and running in about 2-3 weeks. Looks good. Total price? 1550 with shipping. Not too shabby if I do say so myself. I'm going to need your help when I overclock to 3ghz. Also, I think I read this right, but I can swap in any processor that fits the LGA 775 slot, right? So eventually I could upgrade to a faster processor that fits the motherboard? Yes sir. I bet I can make it about $1200 if I made it myself. ;) Edit: I take it back. The keyboard, mouse, and speakers. ![]() Oh I'm sure YOU could. But I sure as heck couldn't. I have no idea how to apply thermal compound, install a heat sink, attach a power supply, etc. I wish I had the time to learn all of this since I am so interested in computing. However, what with full time grad school and all I'm not too free to choose my activities. I'll have to relegate myself to changing graphics cards, RAM, hard drives, fans, etc. I'm thinking I'm going to need 3-5 case fans to keep this badboy cool once I OC. Is 3 ghz too audacious? Lets make a bet shall we? I bet you can reach 3.0 GHz in ONE attempt. Stable. 3.0 GHz is nothing. Raise the FSB a notch. Keep Vcore at stock. Boom. There you go. Takes a minute. I thought about building it for you and then shipping it over. But I don't want to be responsible if it's lost in the mail or something. ![]() How fast can you go and remain stable and reliable on a 2.4g 6600 quad? Most overclockers stop at 3.6 GHz. The people who are lucky and get good CPUs can go further. 3.6 GHz takes a few day of tweaking and stress testing to get it stable. Let me tell you something. The RAM you're getting is't the best thing in the world. It works great at it's rated speed but it won't overclock. Sorry. I just have to get the best stuff. Don't mind me. ![]() Why do I need to overclock my ram? For fun. ![]() But not as important as ocing the CPU, right? Nope. You won't even need to. Your FSB:RAM ratio will be 1:1 if you get your Quad to 3.6 GHz. Is your goal 3.0? http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc.php?id=330562 I have mine at 1066 MHz. 800 -> 1066 I want to shoot for a stable 3ghz out of the box. Once I get comfortable with it, get in a few burn ins, and note down the core temps, then I'll start thinking about 3.2 - 3.4. But that's not for awhile. If you get on AIM I'll help you once you get your system. Jeez. Spamming the team board like crazy here... ![]() |

![]() LOL! How many replies will it let us make? I don't know.. I don't know. ![]() Why would we ever edit out any of the quotes? It's so convenient and compact to have them all right here in front of me. PS: Sorry we jacked your forum - hope you feel better! Takes a while to scroll. I hope you feel better Keith. Going to grab 2x1 GB of Crucial Ballistix RAM from stores. http://shop3.outpost.com/product/5375608?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG Edit edit: Woot! I got a new project badge. ![]() I'm thinking about getting more RAM and/or faster RAM as soon as my pc arrives. Do you recommend GSKIL or Crucial Ballistix? |
