Re: I hate the core percentage jumping in BOINC

The granularity on the CPU Throttle is not what it was and I too, running BOINC on a server, would have liked to have it nicely smoothed as it used to be with UD but that is not available to us anymore as a download.

That way RMclock could be configured to work and power consumption really is an issue with many out here.

You don't have to guilt the guy into 100% or nothing

If you read between the lines I suspect the chap (or chapess) is a Doctor

You know people who have cared about these things all the days of their lives and the right sort of person to publicize the great work going on here on the World Community Grid.

Please think before you speak, you are here to help, not chase folk away

Dave
We have to deal with a lot of mean-spirited quotes like [POST #1] "BOINC is a pile of crap and I already left last week, so don't try to change my mind because I already left."

The title of this thread did not leave much room for negotiation.
I hate the core percentage jumping in BOINC
Three of us said to set it to 100% so it wouldn't jump around any more.

Doctors????? I had to change doctors because the original kept giving more pills to relieve symptoms caused by the previous pills instead of going back to the original problem. He got a kickback from the drug companies for each new pill actually dispensed. They catered lunch each day for the staff, so I had an idea what was going on. We patients all were accused of having the "disease of the year" so we all could be tested for it. There was a bit of French Justice in that one. One year it was "asthma". The next it was "sleep apnea". Naturally the doctor had to bring in outside testers, charged for it, and probably made a percentage on the effort. I also left because I was being given pills for symptoms noted IN SOMEBODY ELSE'S medical record because we had similar names. I was able to compare notes one day. On the last day I was there, I was offered a prescription from 6 months previous that they finally located. I already had a replacement by that time.

Could anyone actually be trying to run RMClock on top of the BOINC throttle set to less than 100%???

As of now, it's interfering with my computer usage so the whole purpose of BOINC is being defeated by its flaws.
Something in there is ill-behaved. I have an application that totally takes over while BOINC backs out to 0%. When it finishes, BOINC resumes.

Re: I hate the core percentage jumping in BOINC

I will be talking to David Anderson (the head of BOINC) about some other items. I will ask him about changing the way the throttle works in BOINC. There is a continual stream of user complaints about the way it works so it needs to change.

This would not be implemented until the BOINC 6 client is released (so it could be 6 months before it is available).

Re: I hate the core percentage jumping in BOINC

It never hurts to ask.

I saw this over at the BOINC forum:
The 6.2 release or later with have a CPU control that acts at 1/10th of a second precision. Personally think it should be millisecond control, but lets wait and see how 1/10th behaves. The temp control itself for BOINC has been mentioned a few times. It would be nice to shut BOINC down rather than the PC if it gets too hot. Don't think its on the development roadmap though.
Who wrote the message? Sekerob. What goes around comes around.
