Re: Old UD member?

I actually found the red text very useful as a "don't read me" indicator. Whenever I saw it I just scrolled past...

grid.org --- on April 27, 2007 the lights went out

thunder, lightning, hail, rain, gloom outside....

What does it all mean?

United Devices was in Austin, so the weather is paying us a visit.

It must be the 1 year anniversary of the demise of grid.org on April 27, 2007.

We've all been doing useful science over here since or before then, so that must be a good thing.

That was crazy - a tree was blown down right behind my apartment!

Old UD user

Just wanted to post something, I was also an old UD user, I started right after my grandmother died from Lung Cancer, Feb 2002. I wasted a lot of time and CPU cycles on UD, and now I read they pulled the plug. I moved back to SETI (Boinc) sometime in 2005, about the same time everyone else was leaving UD, and really didn't look back (until tonight). I don't even recall setting up an account on WCG, and I actually have some credit on WCG.

I read through some posts, and saw some familiar names, thanks for the information, and a couple smiles.

Good Luck everyone.

Re: Old UD member?

I was wondering the same thing.
For years, I ran the UD(United Devices) agent on all my computers, in the home, at work, etc. I was rather proud of myself because I got up the ladder to being close to the 30th highest point earner(since I was crunching for UD since they started).

This one seems very much like UD. Even the web site.

I'm not going to do what I did before with UD unless I know I wont loose my points. I don't really care if the points don't do anything, its a 'race' for me.

Its a darn shame the UD grid.org went down and they screwed everyone. They could have been nice and gave people a choice to move on to something else, and move their points.

What do you think?

Re: Old UD member?

NeuroPsyche, World Community Grid uses BOINC. Your BOINC points will live on even if WCG finishes.

However, World Community Grid is in a totally different position to UD. UD was underfunded, had insufficient work, and less than one staff member. World Community Grid is funded by IBM, they have a full-time staff, and work lined up for years to come.

World Community Grid isn't going anywhere, except towards bigger, better and more effective computation.

Re: Old UD member?

Speaking of the old grid.org 'service', does anyone know if there's any way for a former user to get at their stats? Various problems caused me to miss the last six months or so of the old grid.org's...disintigration.

Hello Arturus Magi,
History of the Grorg: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=12946

The statistics site disappeared with only a few days notice.
