What sort of network connection? Can you use a proxy?

Re: BOINC on an off-line computer

I take it from the lack of response that what i want is not possible, so how have other people dealt with this situation?

It really isn't convenient.

Are you sure there is no internet connection? Is the entire LAN completely isolated from the internet?

Re: BOINC on an off-line computer

Did you get to here from a computer that was NOT on the network?

In the old UD days, it was easy to walk floppy disks back and forth (sneakernet) to a computer that was not online.

It is more difficult or impossible with BOINC.

How do you download Windows updates or daily virus program updates for that network? I guess those must be sent over by flashdrive, eh?

Re: BOINC on an off-line computer

Last year, I tried BOINCing on an offline computer and flashing back and forth, but it really got confused sorting out the timestamps between two computers, especially if it had to sort out something a bit sooner or later, which it hates to do. At times, it ascribed a due date of 1900. It's not as clean as sneakernetting the old UD workunits, which weren't hooked to the registry.

I'm not sure I'd do it ON THE flash drive, although it would be possible. Bashing it with repeated checkpoint writes is not the best idea from what I've seen out there. At least one brand spreads the writes throughout the drive, which helps a little bit. The transfer rate is also slower than a hard disk. Simply moving files around between computers doesn't increment the writes that fast.

Like all flash memory devices, flash drives can sustain only a limited number of write and erase cycles before failure. Mid-range flash drives under normal conditions will support several hundred thousand cycles, although write operations will gradually slow as the device ages. This should be a consideration when using a flash drive to run application software or an operating system. To address this, as well as space limitations, some developers have produced special versions of operating systems (such as Linux) or commonplace applications (such as Mozilla Firefox) designed to run from flash drives. These are typically optimized for size and configured to place temporary or intermediate files in the computer's main RAM rather than store them temporarily on the flash drive.

Re: BOINC on an off-line computer

Let me preface my response by saying that I'm struggling to figure out my own connectivity issues!

It would be helpful to those providing guidance if you could provide more details regarding your situation.

I see your setup as being a PC connected to a LAN that has a (internet) connection. Is this correct? Is the LAN connected to the internet all the time, or does someone have to initiate a connection?

The most reliable connection I have is through dial-up AOL. (And yes I get my water from a spring!) I've successfully gotten a wireless network in my home to transfer files and printing tasks, but I've had lots of problems connecting reliably for all sorts of projects... including BOINC

Chuckle!!! Looking forward to more info..

Re: BOINC on an off-line computer

Manually transporting on usb/jump/flashdrive from a machine that has internet and can host a second BOINC install that is started strictly for fetching and returning work transported to/from the non-internetted crunching machine works with necessary precautions, some mentioned earlier in this thread. Several home-brew instructions are around these fora and in other places.... and of course it goes without saying that full owners permission is in place.
