I am having problems with my APC UPS. It is flashing red AND green light with a horrible sound! If I do not post today (or even a day or too after that) you will know that means I am trying to get my UPS hot-swapped by American Power Conversion. I may even go to the local Office Max and see if they have a UPS capable of running my old, yet trusty i7 870 and the monitor. If I am able to get one later (the UPS), when, I do not know), will someone please tell me what to do with my work-units in case of how long it will take me to get a new UPS.
----------------------------------------Here at WCG, some veteran cruncher replied to another in some other thread here about 'deleting' some work units which have not started yet. Yes, delete. Not abort or whatever. After all these years, confusing threads like that. Geez ... Anyway, will anyone give me advice concerning that work unit issue. This UPS has served me 5-7 years so I cannot complain. Must go now. I wonder if I could go without a UPS for a couple days. Sounds foolish I know. The Monster Cable surge suppressor was expensive in the day (used for Home Theater systems). Laast thing, if the red and black lights and noise stop, should I try to onlly run 2 CPU's instead of four? Otr not crunch *until* I get a new UPS??? Got to run while this UPS is working!!!!!!!!! If I have not made myself clear, I am in a hurry because of this problem!! Later, I hope! ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Johnny Cool at Apr 13, 2014 2:47:41 PM] |

Heya,
----------------------------------------The only reason for deleting a workunit is if you think you will not finish them before the deadline. Work units are typically assigned to multiple users for redundancy checking, Im not sure if they (IBM) are notified when you delete a unit or not. Although if you do not return before the deadline i know they do "reseed" and send out another copy. They might reduce the amount of files they send that machine in advance until a certain "trust' level has been restored. I do not know much about UPS myself however. Most of my machines do not merit having one, as a power down isnt as detrimental to me as it would be to someone else. Blinking Green might be reaching end of lifecycle http://www.fixya.com/support/t7742949-es_350_blinking_red_green I also found this searchign some forums for you """" Here's an APC ES 500 that has five lights. Bad battery is continuoius short beeps with red replace battery light. Overload is continuous tone with red overload light. Not just WCG crunching im assuming, if its that important it must stay online all the time. And a side question unrelated to troubleshooting. Last evening, I went to Amazon.com to purchase a APC BE750G Power Saving Battery Back-UPS Sold by: Amazon.com LLC. APC has banker's hours. I guess only huge commercial accounts have a phone number to call them (I am very sure they do). Also, my browser warned me that their certificate did not jive as well! Yikes! I will call them later to see if I can get a new battery for the one APC I have currently. Gotta run. This is now my only compter and I must be able to have it running properly. Whenever you "delete" a work unit, WCG is notified and the correct term is "abort." You can abort any work unit for any reason, however some of the more common reasons to abort work units include such as issues: if you are not able to complete the task by the deadline; you believe the task created is invalid based upon a WCG tech forum posting; the work unit is "hanging"; or the task(s) are creating problems for your computer.
----------------------------------------JC, the APC BE750G unit should be okfor your computer providing you are not attaching the unit to a "dirty line", or attaching multiple computers. I prefer higher priced APC units (1300+ watts) because of load issues and one electrical line I have is dirty that has "taken out" about three different less expensive APC units, except for the one now attached. JC, if you need any further information or clarification, please PM me. Ray [Edit 1 times, last edit by RaymondFO at Apr 14, 2014 3:37:45 PM] |

Ray, a dirty line? There are two wall plugs (actually two outlets encased with the common usual plastic dohicky frame. The UPS is plugged into one and my Monster Computer PowerCenter PC 800 HP, Clean Power,1665 Joules, 50K CEG in the other plug. Not much is plugged into that Monster PowerCenter.
----------------------------------------I have a opthamologist appointment early tomorrow. Stuff like that and more is really testing me to no end. Long story. ![]() |

Ray, a dirty line? .... ![]() A dirty electrical line (a/k/a "dirty electricity" or "dirty power") is generally defined as a surge, a sag, a spike, a transient, a fluctuation, an interruption, or noise, "dirty power" is some type of abnormality in the electricity that runs your house or facility (What causes "Dirty" Power?). In my case, very sharp and sudden electrical current spikes and/or sharp decreases in current. I no longer use that line as I believe it also "terminated" at least one maybe two computers as well. I used to hear my APC unit start beeping or hear a clicking nose until I changed electrical lines. I have not had any issues since I changed electrical lines. My old APC Back-UPS ES USB 750VA has lasted me since Oct 2005. Same outlet. Dirty line not a problem here. What I failed to mention is that when this happened Sunday evening, we had a prolific "Spring Storm' that had rain and snow. Worse, were the greater than 30 (easily) MPG wind gusts. Wind speed was greater than 20 MPH. This is the first time I saw and heard the quick beeps and both blinking red and green lights. If anything, possibly a strong indicator that the UPS had roughly 2 weeks before a total fail (that from many posts of folks who had the same issue). Anyway, my APC Back-UPS ES USB 750VA (I am guessing it will not perform as well my older UPS. The cost of the battery alone for my older one is $79.95. I did not want to spend the extra money until I take care of a couple things that are *far* more important. I guess I will seen soon. I rather dislike posting personal issues on any public board; anywhere. I hope that all of our Team Mates continue to keep on crunching away. The ophthalmologist appointment this early morning has left my eyes *really blurry*. I hope that all will bear with me this month (whatever). My new backup has been delivered and I am not even going to replace my older one yet. My eyes are not up to that. I think they would like a nice Colorado-brewed ale. ![]() Thanks for the post, Ray! |

Awesome Build Johnny, No wonder my 3 devices are straining to keep up with you.
----------------------------------------Ill have to gather up and post the specs sometime. Ive been considering building a small form factor with a crunching cpu perhaps with a slot for a gpu or two, but ill have to get more feedback on it before going that way :3 ![]() |

That APC UPS was a very bad decision due to stupid "Order at once" at Amazom.com.
----------------------------------------Amazon.com has a very deceptive "Customer Reviews" in that 3 different models of APC UPS systems were all listed in the model number that I purchased (and wasted even more money on a two day delivery: $82.99 Sold by Amazon.com LLC Shipping and Handling: $23.86 ----------- Bad reviews about several issues. Constant beep sounds when even the slightest things happen (yes, I know I could install that CD and control that, yet it is a waste of cpu resources I think). That and some comments about One Comment: In reading the reviews and user comments I found one thing in common. Apparently, according to the various vendors, active-PFC PSUs do not work with simulated sinewave outputs when the UPS is on battery. One must have one of the more expensive UPS models with pure sinewave output.
