Important news all! We have a new project:
----------------------------------------Jurisica Mapping Cancer Markers and Help Conquer Cancer Scientist Joined: Feb 28, 2007 Post Count: 13 Status: Offline Project Badges: Welcome to Mapping Cancer Markers Dear World Community Grid volunteers, We're excited to introduce you to our new project, Mapping Cancer Markers. Most cancers lack effective markers to detect disease early, to identify high risk patients (prognostic signatures), and to predict optimal treatment strategy (predictive signatures). The main challenge is learning from and using the enormous amounts of complex, molecular data from tumor samples. Many methods have been introduced to generate prognostic and predictive signatures from these data, but we lack systematic approaches to find all useful signatures, and to select the best one. Counter intuitively, good signatures comprise not only the most differential markers. Identifying these less differential markers - "the best supporting actors" - calls for novel, integrative approaches as current statistical and machine learning methods fail in this task. The Mapping Cancer Markers (MCM; http://www.cs.utoronto.ca/~juris/MCM.htm ) project aims to comprehensively and systematically discover clinically useful markers to help: 1. Detect cancer early, 2. Identify high-risk patients, and 3. Predict treatment response. To power this research, we rely on World Community Grid volunteers who donate their computers' spare capacity to carry out this extensive analysis. Finding all clinically useful markers would require processing thousands of patient samples and testing an astronomical number of marker combinations, which is not feasible even on World Community Grid. We developed approaches called heuristics to reduce the search space, enabling us to tackle this challenge. However, the success of MCM project is only enabled by World Community Grid with the computing resources donated by volunteers around the world. Considering the diversity of analyses and data, we will have large variation in runtimes and work unit duration. We will keep you updated on the progress and discoveries, and would be happy to answer any questions you may have about the project. We hope you will find our project interesting, and support its goals. Have been running it since Friday afternoon. Got my bronze badge with this morning's update and will get the silver tonight. Not many problems except with one of my rigs but that rig has had problems with most of the WCG sciences. Have moved it to Asteroids. It runs fine there. Have noticed a few LONG runnning tasks but have let them run and they eventually finished.

Unfortunately, we found a limitation with the default random number generator being used for the project. The increased volume of results revealed some duplication of computation due to this. That is, the results computed are valid and correct, but in some cases they are duplicated instead of exploring new regions of the search space. For this reason, we are temporarily pausing the project and making some code changes to improve the random number generator usage. We will run a brief beta test for this change and if all looks good, will soon (in a few days) resume the project at full speed. The nature of research is that it often contains unexpected surprises and this is just one of them. Members will receive the normal credits for the work already performed. I got all excited seeing we were #1 in the SNS challenges but then I looked and saw that everybody had zeros for points and time. There were results but we're third even though we're listed as first so I'm guessing there are some problems with the stats.
----------------------------------------I remember reading something about the summary page not agreeing with the individual team challenge pages, but I'd assumed it was just a time lag thing or something. This is pretty bad. Oh well. I guess that's one of the items on the redesign punch list. Are the other summary stats more or less accurate?   |

twilyth the SN2S project went intermittent (just like all the other indeterminate projects: the research studies, research funding, yada yada. Too bad! I also really liked crunching those as it is a horrible disease for people who live in those climates/global locations. sad I don't understand why that should matter though. What am I missing?If WCG is reporting run times for the project, shouldn't it also be reporting points and results? Or are you talking about why there are no rankings for that challenge? That would make sense since the distribution of work units will be uneven. But in that case, why does the system even let us set up challenges for intermittent projects?
