First, a somewhat funny story here in Colorado Springs (yes, we need to keep our sense of humor/humour in this 'extended' world economy):

Mr. Moose paid a rare visit to northern Colorado Springs Friday, wading in a pond and hanging out in the weeds.

People mostly left him alone and The Gazette won't be too specific concerning his whereabouts. Let's put it this way: Wherever home is, Mr. Moose was far away from it.

The Colorado Parks and Wildlife department says that the best places to observe moose in Colorado are North Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, northwest of Creede, Grand Mesa, near Grand Junction, and the Laramie and Cache la Poudre river drainages. None of those places is close to Colorado Springs.

There probably were never a lot of moose in Colorado, but the ones that were here were hunted to extinction long before many white settlers arrived. In 1978, a dozen moose were reintroduced in northern Colorado and the population is now is estimated to be about 2,300.

Given the initial population 35 years ago, that's an impressive number, but it's small compared with elk - there are more than 289,000 elk in Colorado.

Elk gather in herds, but moose often travel alone - like Mr. Moose apparently did. Colorado's moose have turned up in northern New Mexico, too.

Mr. and Mrs. Squirrel and their off-spring (now totaling a bazilion in our neighborhood (beautiful old growth Douglas firs and Blue Spruce tree are a perfect environment for them) are still happily romping around and putting their nosey noses in all the flower pots and are *still* attempting to 'defeat' the squirrel-proof bird feeder (they do NOT ever quit). Fortunatey, the telephone company *finally* purchased squirrel-proof shields to keep them from chewing up the lines and cables. That was a major bummer. Fortunately for them, the neighbors *still* break for them.

Free-DC Stats

Since we're an int'l team, I wasn't sure how many people had gotten the reference - in retrospect - and I figured it was too late to say anything. I should have included a link.

It only aired original episodes during the 60's (1959-1964) but has been broadcast on network and cable at various times right up until the present (see link above). That's in the US though. It's regarded as one of the best cartoons of all time though so I assume that it's gotten some attention overseas as well, but I have no idea how much.

Anyway, the expression, 'moose and squirrel' comes from the russian character Boris Badenov, referring to Rocky and Bullwinkle obviously (though not in that order). You have to understand that this cartoon was produced during the height of the cold war so if you watch any of the episodes, that's important to understand to really fully appreciate the humor - especially the stereotypes.
