Being at the front end, it is often easy to forget the amount of work that is done to produce the units that we are given to process.
----------------------------------------Thanks very much for the explanation and wake up from our complacency, knreed. The backroom boys are doing an excellent job. We should all be very grateful for your time and efforts! Crunching in memory of my Mum PEGGY, cousin ROPPA and Aunt AUDREY. |

As one who works in IT, you can be sure that IT is always seriously busy with a massive backlog of projects. I'd love to see just what the WCG server room looks like. It's in a IBM hosting center [rows upon rows of racks, with WCG's occupying 1 or 2], at least that's the picture I'm having. Since it's partly in cloud [cloud traffic said to 60% consist of rearranging data within], the fix portion of the science apps distribution could be anywhere inside the center. Crunch On. P.S. Were watching a baseball movie last night about the Oakland Atlantics, where the coach started running his team almost purely off statistics generated by his comptroller... HCC as proportion of Runtime: http://bit.ly/WCGCPU as proportion of Results: http://bit.ly/WCGTPD as proportion of computational contribution [thanks to GPU]: http://bit.ly/WCGTFL Different measures, different leaders. :) The dashboard has it down now to 93 days remaining, based on old volume/est.completion information. Viktors promised to post in a few weeks to give an update after getting more volume feedback from the scientists. Still thinking this project might go intermittent in some SIMAP format. Would do this on the 16th, or 3rd Wednesday of month, so there's no competition ;P [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Nov 14, 2012 10:34:58 AM] |

Great post by knread - deserving the widest possible audience. Whilst it's a reply to unjustified criticism earlier in the thread IMHO the content is of interest to all members. It is worthy of it's own thread and maybe important enough to warrant a BOINC Notice and/or an email to WCG members.

P.S. Were watching a baseball movie last night about the Oakland Atlantics, where the coach started running his team almost purely off statistics generated by his comptroller... Off topic: Good movie. I enjoyed it. The approach is valuable but not foolproof. One of a number of tools in the bag. He was able to build a winning team for a LOT less money. Cheers

Thanks for the update knreed! Working with IT myself so I am not surprised with the amount of work (and often un-appreciation by front end users).

For comparison: The record before the double image packaging was 1,357,710 (Nov.12) single image results. The projected double image validations for today, Nov.27, is 830,224 or 1,660,448 single images, an up by 22% over the old record... so sorry, but based on what I knew, that's leaving 65 days (The this morning adjusted algo result)
Crunch On, (and you better hurry if you had any serious badge level in mind ;) |
