Re: Why so few WCG crunchers using the BOINC agent?

The problem is with Zone Alarm. Has nobody thought of asking them to fix it?

Didactylos, OK for ZoneAlarm (although asking them to not show Loopback traffic might be more successful than asking them to fix it), but also
why is it not offered in BoincMgr's File submenu
- to stop it without having to go to TaskManager,
- or to stop it when choosing Close
since obviously Boinc works well without BoincMgr sleeping somewhere.

And while working on this submenu replacing Exit by an explicit "Exit Boinc" might be useful.

So, to summarize:
File
Close BoincMgr window
Stop BoincMgr
Exit Boinc

Jean, from the brief period running ZA, there is an option, so not sure what's there to fix. Doubt ZA will flat out remove the default monitoring of local host traffic.

Do like the Exit or Stop BOINCmgr GUI. Many will not comprehend the significance of the 2 parts.

JmBoullier, that's what the service option is for. BOINC is complicated enough; the goal is to hide complexities like the multiple processes.

Re: Why so few WCG crunchers using the BOINC agent?

Sekerob, I remember having read something like that in one of your posts and I have spent a while this morning looking into all "options", "advanced", "customize", "expert rules" and alike items of ZA and I have not found a way to change the default behaviour. sad
When I have more time I might try their site and their forum as well.
Many will not comprehend the significance of the 2 parts.
I tend to think like you, until the day comes when one wants to close BoincMgr and stops Boinc completely or vice versa. I think that many of us have made such a mistake at least once, unless they have thought a little longer about the difference between both options. smile

Re: Why so few WCG crunchers using the BOINC agent?

There was some back and forth over a download of a new version that I got and others seemed not able to get at the time. Surely that is there now.

that's what the service option is for. BOINC is complicated enough; the goal is to hide complexities like the multiple processes.

Didactylos, that may be true from the developers perspective, but from an end user perspective the goal of the service option is to have Boinc running as soon as a boot is finished until the next shutdown, whether somebody is using the machine or not Given that, all the hidden complexity is only a by-product.

And talking about complexity, when you are asked without any preliminary warning to enter the password of I don't remember which user while you are installing as a service for the first time I am not sure that one thinks that the complexity is hidden.

And what about having to rely on ZA (for example) to forbid Boincscr from starting although you have said at install time that you do not want to use a screensaver at all.

I think it is always better to say or show things clearly and correctly rather than to rely on indirect effects of an option which is not meant primarily for those side effects.

Of course that's only my opinion and what I have learned by experience, and others may disagree and/or have had a different experience.

Re: Why so few WCG crunchers using the BOINC agent?

I know the service installation isn't as simple as it can be. I was explaining why those extra shutdown options you suggested will never, ever be added.

The goal is simplicity. We're a long way away, still. :-(

Re: Why so few WCG crunchers using the BOINC agent?

Brothers (crunching brothers that is smile )!!!
Crunching is a disease, a dependence on helping with your PC the world, to see your stats going up, to see first hand what the scientific community is working on.
Don't be afraid of the UD crunchers leaving!
THEY WILL COME BACK even if we crunch on BOINC version 1.0 again. It is they're (our) need to feel that we do some good in life, and crunching is a FUN way of doing good things in life. Even if you put back all the errors in Boinc or switch to a real crappy crunching manager , people will come back.
IT IS THEY'RE NATURE!

Prove me wrong. smile

Re: Why so few WCG crunchers using the BOINC agent?

those extra shutdown options you suggested
I have only suggested one option, not to shutdown but only to stop BoincMgr which seems of no use while it is off the desktop. For the existing options I have only suggested to name them for what they are.

The goal is simplicity.
For that matter my understanding is that the Simple View is the right thing to use. The suggestions I have made are all for the Advanced View.

Regarding use of "ever" and "never" I am old enough to know that they are most often advantageously replaced by "when?". smile

That's all for me for the time being. Personally I have no serious problem with Boinc features right now. smile
