I've been an IT professional most of my life and I find it frustrating and very time-consuming, so one can expect the average user to be totally put off. Same here. I'm an IT pro but do not want to spend my time trying to figure out why the BOINC client always seems to be suspended and not doing anything. I simply want to donate my screensaver time to a worthwhile cause without any fuss on part. That wasn't happening with BOINC, so I uninstalled it and went back to the UD. I won't use BOINC again. |

The BOFH moniker comes to mind, sorry, but I'd expect a bit more perseverance from an IT professional. Out of the box installed and applying the "Minimum Impact" profile and installed as a service, not screensaver, ensures it will run when the machine is idle.
----------------------------------------UD will have the plug pulled on June 30, bar major disaster and BOINC 5.10.44 has been very very good to me, in fact from 5.10.35 it's been picture perfect, even on Vista.

I can only comment on my experience. I was a happy, willing, and eager participant of the UD engine. I've been contributing free cycles to the UD projects for years. In fact, I have computer dedicated to UD work. I do nothing else with them but let them download data packets and process them. UD has worked great for me. I was busy racking up points and hopefully providing some good to the medical community. I've installed BOINC on one of my test machines and didn't like it at all. My firewall noted that this new engine is very very chatty. In the current climate of security threats, etc.. I find the chatty-ness to be completely unacceptable. I didn't experience this behavior with the UD engine. I have 8 machines at my house and all but 1 run UD. I hope BOINC continues to evolve and fixes this chatty problem. I'm just not comfortable with any software program being that talkative when it (at the time) has no need to reach out to the Internet. At that point in time, it should just crunch the work it has already downloaded from the assignment servers. As for me, when UD work stops, so will my contribution to these projects.

My firewall noted that this new engine is very very chatty. I tried BOINC last Fall, then switched back. Apparently, ZoneAlarm records the internal communication of the program as network traffic. This is unacceptable for me as well: I don't want my traffic indicator to be effectively nullified. So I won't be making the migration, unless of course BOINC is fixed or a webpage with screenshots teaches me how to configure ZoneAlarm to ignore BOINC's activity. It's been fun though and I've been happy to help. Count me in until the end of May! |

Sad that people give up so easily. The problem is with Zone Alarm. Has nobody thought of asking them to fix it?

Found ways in Kerio (Sunbelt) PF, ZoneAlarm and Comodo PF to let them ignore the Local Host chatterboxing by BOINC. In no way does that compromise the security. If even a Start Here forum FAQ is created for the concerned and not consulted, then what's the point even to write FAQ's?
----------------------------------------NB: Per an email circulation just going/gone out the end date was put forward to May 31, 2008. Dear ......, We want to ensure that you continue to contribute to the research projects that you have currently selected, and also have an opportunity to participate in all of World Community Grid's latest projects, such as finding a cure for Cancer and Dengue Fever and building climate models that will improve the quality of life in Africa. To continue to participate in World Community Grid, you need to take some steps to upgrade the World Community Grid software on your PC or laptop. As we announced in August of last year, World Community Grid is migrating from the United Devices (UD) software platform to the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) software platform. The decision was made to provide a better volunteer experience for all World Community Grid members. You can read about the features and advantages of the BOINC software in a technical tip from the March 2007 newsletter and in a post about the transition in the Member News forum. As detailed in the technical tip and forum post, after May 31, 2008, World Community Grid will no longer be using the UD software and members who have not switched to the BOINC software will not be contributing to any of the research projects running on World Community Grid. Our records indicate that the following computers are registered to your member name and have returned a UD result in the past three weeks: * xxxxxx This is a reminder that you need to install the BOINC software before May 31, 2008 in order to continue to donate your unused computer cycles to help humanity. The process of migrating to BOINC is very easy and takes less than 5 minutes. To start the migration, visit the World Community Grid website where you can download and install the BOINC software. The BOINC installer will detect if your computer is running the UD software and will help you uninstall it. If you have any questions, we encourage you to post them in the BOINC Agent Support forum. Thank you in advance for switching to BOINC and continuing to be an integral part of the success of World Community Grid.

....and another way to stop it is to go into TaskManager, and End Process Boincmgr.....and Boincmgr ONLY. This leaves everything running, crunchinh, returning results and downloading.....you just cannot see it! When you want to check run Boincmgr, check it all then kill it again.
I have been using this for months and it works perfectly. |

Scribe, I dont understand why you continue to do that and not install BOINC as a proper service. It wont even launch BOINCmgr and when you need it you can exit it without killing the service or the need to fumble with Task Manager.... but i think we went thru that reason(s) of whatever it was. These guys want uncompromised security.
