So what's your ride [gunner]?

Nothing exotic like a Saleen ...just an ol' GMC 4X4 Diesel Pickup

It's a shame that master Figdor wasn't old enough to experience the 60's and the muscle car era. Those were fun years and we didn't have to rob a bank to own one. Sure, some of the richer fellas could have imported something from Europe, but we didn't have to consider gas mileage and downsizing. Gas was cheap and the roads were wide.

Cars were relatively easy to work on and many of the parts were interchangeable. We grew up with those big, high horsepowered, gas guzzling and great sounding monsters. They were the subject of many a tune and were a part of our culture. I'm glad to be old enough to have participated.

At least until you skidded into a ditch because of your primitive suspension and drive system. RWD = ditchmonkey. American suspension, either A: soft and boatlike or B: bone-jarringly stiff.

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 24 smilesmile

I'm with you on the Mercedes thing - they're an embarrassment to Germany. New Benzes literally rust out in the parking lot. THANKS CHRYSLER! But on the BMW vs Audi debate you're on the wrong side, sort of. Up until this year, BMW has made underpowered crap and slapped the blue and white pie chart on it and sold millions. Take the 3 series. To buy a Bimmer that would come CLOSE to competing with my A4 you'd have to shell out an absurd 7k more and STILL NOT HAVE AWD. For that you would have to pay more like 11k more. As far as Germany V. Detroit, I'm afraid we euros have this in the bag. Any category - from HP per litre to skidpad performance, the euros have it hands down. Also, we're not nearly as expensive as we used to be. You can pick up a good condition 01 A4 like mine for 12k with less than 80k miles!

In all honesty, I'm annoyingly big on practicality. I want something that will get me from point A to point B without any unplanned stops at any point C's cheaply and for a long time. That 12k of yours would get me 4-5 years of transportation (with maint.) - about 104k-130k miles. Never happen with Detroit and highly unlikely with German at that cost. That leaves Japanese. I've had too many folks with Nissan's complain about the dealers for too many years for me to consider that despite the good quality. I eliminate the luxury lines like Lexus, Infiniti, BMW, etc. as I can't see paying a 25-50% premium for an equally equipped vehicle that forces you to pay 20-30 cents a gallon extra just to run the engine. That pretty much leaves Toyota. I've got 260K miles on my PU now and finally replaced the original clutch around November (240K+ miles). It's not broken down on me; I've not had to replace a part that broke on me as none have. My wife's Toyota is 125K+ in 6 years with very similar experience.

However, the original point was about vehicles for new 15-16 year old drivers. Anything that runs decently, is old, big, heavy and not zippy is a good choice. They're all too likely to make a mistake so anything you can do to improve their odds of survival is a good thing. Folks that buy their kids a brand new high performance sports car or lux SUV at 16 are stupid and begging for grief. Kid wants a car, they can pay for it. They learn to appreciate it a lot better that way. Even better, odds are they'll live longer.

Hummm ... let me count the number of FWD's running at NASCAR ... that would be 0. Indy Car ... whoops 0 again. Formula 1 ... go figure ... 0 again. Good luck with the kraut burner. laughing biggrin

If you skid into a ditch, it ain't the car's fault. You have to know what your capabilities are and what the car's are and not exceed those. I hate that counties are so big on paving roads. I think restricting new drivers to dirt roads for the first year or two would be a great thing. When you can take your car around a 90 degree turn at normal speeds without braking or slowing, you're ready for paved roads.

Remind me again how many rally cars run RWD? Oh yeah, none. Why do no touring cars run AWD? Oh yeah, it's illegal because it makes the cars too fast. And for the record, my car is all wheel drive (AWD). Which means at minimum, DOUBLE THE GRIP!

4 wheel drive FTW!
