On this day, we were all confined to barracks with reduced kit, incommunicado, waiting for June 4th, the original D-day .
The weather was too bad that day, so XXX Corps went over the next day, but without Armour. This needed heavy loading equipment, which was only available at London and Bristol and suitable weather could not be guaranteed.
It was almost a week before we of VIII Corps could follow on, and we had to leave our transport, drivers, field cooking equipment and cooks behind to endure worse storms on the way. We were in France for ten days before the worst storms came, between 20th and 22nd June..
We were supposed to have gone into action on the 22nd, (after several postponements) but our field kitchen and transport did not arrive until the 23rd. By the time our first battle commenced, XII Corps was beginning to arrive.

Haldav thanks for your memories of the D day landings, your experiance of that day will hopefully never ever be repeated again for anyone, however you were part of an historical event the like of which was never seen before or since.
The whole world owes you and all the other 'Brave Hearts' a great debt of gratitude!, sad to say tho' as time marches on there are those who don't understand the price paid in that conflict and abuse the freedom so hard fought for!.
