Does anyone know why there's that huge gap between the Widget banner and my Personal Milestones? I checked the coding, but there's nothing separating them.. ![]() This is just a wild guess by a beginner, since no one else answered your post. You have the height attribute of iframe set to 275. Does that affect the spacing and is that set too high? --Just a guess -- gotta go to sleep now 3:45AM comes early. |

And Diane--
You could just copy the actual badge images and paste them on ShoutLife, or another site, and reference the images and locations. |

The badges are referenced in the member XML, so if you process that you can recreate the badges.

First: Nice idea those badges and widgets!
----------------------------------------Second: I like less the way you implemented the widgets. Why via an iframe:
Making a plugin for every social networking site and weblog solution does not seem to be very efficient. Why not make the widget a dynamically generated JPEG picture? Or give the ability to choose which kind of output you like, JPEG, HTML IFRAME or for example Flash? Oh, and while you are at it, indeed include the badges in the widget (or give the option to do so). Not intended to be overly critical here, just meant as constructive feedback to this great new option. (oh, and before you ask/suggest, I am not skilled enough nor have enough time to build these things myself from the raw XML feed) [Edit 1 times, last edit by chelloocom.xahmol at Jan 16, 2008 11:57:09 AM] |

If it's just to illustrate and convey the message in web pages, does it really matter if the stats part of the banner updates dynamically?
----------------------------------------3 minutes of Windows Paint how one could show off the next release of "advertising" with hot links in the badges to jump to the respective research page e.g. and or hotlink the active projects mentioned. ![]() Upcoming, displayed at my "PromotIO" webpage ![]()
WCG

If it's just to illustrate and convey the message in web pages, does it really matter if the stats part of the banner updates dynamically?] If you really want to be web 2.0ish it does Besides, if it does not need to be dynamic, even more reason to ditch the iframe to spare us that 3 minutes of Paint. Of course there are other sites that already do provide nice dynamic JPEGs with WCG stats. But my point is, if you want to go with the widget mania at this moment all sites seem to be infected with, do it right. For example see the Last.fm widgets ( http://www.last.fm/widgets/ ) where you can choose between Flash and plain old but dynamically generated JPEG and have a plethora of options and support for the most popular social networking sites. |

Err... "real" widgets are constructed from XML, Javascript and CSS. They often use iframes for convenience.
Stats images are just stats images. Bindun. If you want one, use one of the many existing generators. |

OK, one final try, than will stop:
----------------------------------------- yes, I know that the backend of widgets is mostly XML and some form of scripting, regardless of which frontend they use. But most people can't use them that way. But with iframes, most people still can't (don't see the convenience therefore). - I know there are existing generators for dynamic stat images (I even said so in my post). My only point is: if you want to publish widgets that people actually can use, do not use iframes. But OK, if the XML framework is there, there is bound to be someone in this world who will build alternatives. And if I see Wikipedia on a widget , the definition is that broad that almost anything that is dynamically created and can be embedded in a webpage is a "real" widget: The web widget is a portable chunk of code that can be installed and executed within any separate HTML-based web page by an end user without requiring additional compilation. They are derived from the idea of reusable code that has existed for years. (...) Web widgets often but not always use DHTML, JavaScript, or Adobe Flash. (...) A widget is anything that can be embedded within a page of HTML, i.e. a web page. A widget adds some content to that page that is not static. Generally widgets are third party originated, though they can be home made. [Edit 2 times, last edit by chelloocom.xahmol at Jan 16, 2008 3:58:30 PM] |

Hey, see now in the Website updates for Jan 14, 2008 thread :
We've had to temporarily remove the Create Widget pages. Any widgets that have been created and put on websites will continue to function normally. Are they already working on it Probably coincidence. |
