Resource Hog - Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7

Just a little tip from someone whose PC has ground almost to a halt in the last few day

Beware Kaspersky Anti-virus 7

Massive memory foot print and if you want to get anything done usefully with your PC don't fit this

The effect of this anti-virus software is probably worse than having a software virus

Avoid

Dave

Re: Resource Hog - Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7

Kaspersky is already on our list of trouble-makers, if I recall correctly.

I use Avira AntiVir as well, and I'm very happy with it.

Other popular choices are Avast! and AVG.

I have also been using Avira - personal edition classic(free) with no performance problems to report.

P.S -
I wasn't very impressed with the Symantec Anti-virus as it seemed to slow down opening applications and lag my Core2duo notebook for some reason.

Re: Resource Hog - Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7

Nice test, too bad McAfee isn't included.

By the way, Norton is notorious for slowing systems down.

Personally I'm not fond of shields or live scanning of files so I turn everything off except the firewall, yes the windows firewall, and run a couple of scans once a week for virus and spyware.
I know it's not the most safe way but I do this for years now without problems.

Re: Resource Hog - Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7

Yup I use Avira AntiVir. Works great and never had a problem.

I also use Comodo firewall and Comodo anti malware thanks to another cruncher talking about it recently. I had like 10 errors at first because I didn't see the popups in time to allow the wu's access but after getting them accepted I have had a positive experience biggrin

added: I also use Comodo verification engine. It is great! I like how it verifies the secureness of WCG wOOt!

-I tried downloading the antivirus from Comodo but it won't work with Vista.

Re: Resource Hog - Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7

It came on a cover disk of PCPro and in their spiel it was highly recommended so I gave it a whirl

from my bad memory it took about 1/4 Gig of my good Geil

The final straw was when it said yesterday that it's start up scan would complete 6am on the 31st !!!!

very thorough but I really needed to get stuff done on my PC

Emily my eldest was very supportive she said "I have a Mac tongue"

Back with the Umbrella and happy again.

If only the anti virus would work on my Man Flu that would be a result. Have a few days off at Christmas and sick as a dog, brilliant. I'm hoping today I won't have to lie under the covers shivering that would be a step forward. No Podcast today Diana sad

Re: Resource Hog - Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7

Kaspersky is always cutting edge technology with very little testing. People who use it will soon get exasperated unless they really enjoy that sort of thing.

Symantec lost me years ago. Lots of problems but they never seemed to fix some old bugs and they seemed happy to use my computer to run unimportant background tasks that did not improve my security but did slow me down. Back in the 90s, I experimented a lot with their programs, but I eventually decided that they were acting like a company with too many management levels in their software department.
