Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

The red Car Is a Sunbeam Talbot Not sure of the model or exact age as I didn't see the owner but around the 1950's
cost approx £1100, might hit 90mph plus There were some issues with stopping from such high speeds devilish It however did win the Monte Carlo rally twice in the 1950s Stirling Moss driving . The location is Morecambe Bay With the tide out and fishing boats stranded. Drove along there last evening around 18.30 the bay was full and the sea bloooo.
The Bay is famed for its sunsets as it sinks slowly in the west behind the hills of the lake district

Note the way the Doors open
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Now the older car Is a puzzle that I hope to solve .
I know the people in the "Motor" .Thats what it was not a car and you went "Motoring"
as i said I know the Driver? and passengers but they are Motoring up above nowadays.

Eeeehh, Achtung, Watch Out!

The poor man is driving in the wrong side of the street!!!

Yes, I did notice the way the doors open. In Denmark it was called "suicide doors".
Funny to see the wing flipping out and in ...
Had forgotten those! Remember the first time motoring in the wrong side in England (cirka 1975)
quite a few motorists had sign on the back of their automobiles informing those behind them
that they should expect "NO HAND SIGNALS". Only years and years later, I realised that they meant
that ther new motorcars were equipped with - in all probability - unreliable blinkers.
Some fixed the transition by sticking their arm out of the window, which, of course, only worked when turning right,
but that was OK since that's the scarier turn when driving in the wrong side.

rolling eyes

Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

Ah But No .... We Brits had a Cunning Plan
The Highway Code Gave instructions about Hand signals

I wish I had the earlier edition it gave instructions on waving your whip in a Clockwise or anti clockwise direction when driving a pony and trap

What about this device ??? It was all the rage at one time every other car had one . Mind you in the late fifties all cars in UK were built like tanks big slab pushing air, windscreens only just starting to slope these might have worked if placed correctly in a spot that the aerodynamics specialist had worked out most folks have an idea about airflows nowadays having watched tech stuff for dimbos on the telly, smoke chambers swirl patterns

At t'other end of the vehicle we had the PECO exhaust extractor a bolt on alloy lump with I think some sort of venturi system to pull the gasses thru the system when the car was moving
I think this was going to give us better fuel consumption
Thinking about it now to get the extraction effect the peco had to be in a clean air flow not just tacked on to the end of the exhaust system with a jubilee clip The underside of the car in those days was all bits hanging underneath.
it perhaps a good thing it wasn't too effective as all of our petrol tanks would have been overflowing

Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

Well, we always regarded you Brits an excentric lot,
and that's exactly why we love you in the first place.
love struck
You had books! Holy Cow!
My assumptions and deductions were pitily poor.
Books about hand signals! For all traffic inclusive of "those in charge of horses". This is wonderful!
"I intend to .."
- but you could also "want to", namely when you wanted to communicate with police officers ...
It's lovely and hilarious at the same time looking at it now.
We never had those in Denmark as far as I know,
but we do use hand signals when bicycling on a fairly consistent basis.
Right or left turn and a stop signal.

No wonder they never bothered to install a properly working heating systems in British cars.
They didn't in the Spitfires, so why should you be cosy in your car?
Well, you couldn't anyhow, rolling those panes up and down all the time.
Must have taken some attention away from the traffic, really.

Our first British car was a Ford Zodiac in a ghastly lemonly-greenish shade.
It retained some of the post war generous use of metals. Heavy it was, but ran fast.
On the autobahn it was outdone only by the biggest of BMWs and Mercedeses and the occasional Jaguar.
Twice all it wiring burnt off. Its steering wheel broke as did the gear shift lever.
We could not figure out why the heating controls didn't work after driving
the mandatory 50 miles to get the temp up
until one glorious day I sat there staring at those controls and had a vision.
I pulled out the indicators for heat/cold and up/down from the two turning knobs, and switched them.
You see: The guy installing them in the plant in England forgot it was a left-hand car he built
and plugged in the indicators the way he used to for the domestic market!

That spoiler was all the crazy in several colours here as well.
In Denmark it was supposed to waft insects away before they hit the windscreen, the selling point went.

Our second British car was a kitten - the beautifulliest Jaguar ever made with the slim fenders. Dark silver.
I could tell a lot about that one and about the Reliant Scimitar GTE and the Granada caravan, too.
They were never boring, they kept business brisk at the garage with a steady outflow of finances in our end,
and you had to put your mind at work figuring out what was the matter
- well, almost as having cranky relatives ...

Oh goodness. Things we didn't have here. Where hand signals are still on the driving test as who bothers to maintain their indicators since no one bothers to use them anyway?!

We at Base Camp should like to know why we cannot attract New Base Campers.
As the WCG Forum consists of considerably more teamless crunchers than Base Campers,
there ought to be basis for a descent feed back. Our question is:

Why don't you join Base Camp?

Among the respondents we shall draw one person to recieve our first and only prize:
A full, free imaginary set of Trekking equipment - rugged tent, sleeping bag, boots and rucksack ...
We look forward to hearing your opinions, Ladies and Gentlemen.

Re: Base Camp.......The team that isn't

Here are the veggies that didn't completely explode due to the heavy rains. 4 tomatoes completely split all the way open and the bugs got into them. Eew! But the peppers are good.

Nice peppers.
How do they score on the Scoville scale?

My plants must be the slowest ever - only now have they decided to form a few tiny flower buds.
The tomatoes are fine tho, still green but promising
