My first query about the Help Conquer Cancer Project

biggrin
Here is my first question.

Reading through the HCC FAQ section at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/projects_sh...Faq.do?shortName=hcc1#318 :
Each work unit is a photograph of a protein crystallization experiment (one out of 1,536 images per protein, photographed six times over a period of one month), a visual record of the state of a protein sample dissolved in a solution of crystallizing agents.

Just what does this mean? We have more than 9400 proteins to do, each with 1536 images taken 6 times over a month (9216 images per protein). I assume that we have X crystallization experiments photographed at intervals of 5 or 6 days (6 times in all). But are Y different filters or lighting conditions used at each interval? In other words, is X = 1536 or is it X * Y = 1536?

Somewhere i remember seeing that there were 86 million images to process. 9400x1536x6 happens to be 86,630,400

X=1536. Only a single filter/lighting condition is used, but 1536 different "cocktails" (mixtures of buffers, salts, polyethylene glycols, etc.) are tested per protein.
