I'm not trying to create a username, just use the one I already have.

I'm not sure if this is a limitation of BOINC or of BOINC Manager.
----------------------------------------Anyway, the easiest solution is to register a new username. The more complicated solution is to attach to WCG using the command line and your account key, instead of your username. Click on "My Grid" to retrieve your account key. Stop BOINC, then open a command prompt in the BOINC folder. Next, type: boinc --attach_project http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org accountkey (Substituting your own account key.) I think the more complicated solution is the only one that keep all my stats together.
Thanks, up and running. |

Many (most?) systems do not allow accentuated characters in usernames.
----------------------------------------Some (few?) allow them and manage them correctly. A third category allow them but are not very good at dealing with them. For example you can create such a username but some modules don't accept them, or translate accentuated characters to the not accentuated equivalent, etc... The result in this third category is usually a horrible mess! To always be on the safe side I would advise to never use accentuated characters or other kinds of national characters in usernames and passwords. Also think of the case of travelling in countries where you will not be able to easily enter those characters with local equipments. Cheers. Jean. |

Many languages use entirely different scripts - Cyrillic and Kanji, to name but two. Full Unicode support is more important than ever, particularly to a global endeavour like WCG's.
Technical limitations imposed by the UD system have caused various headaches with regard to this, but now UD is on the way out, BOINC is a problem that can be easily solved. |

Ouch... no need to resort to the command line. 1. Request your account key as advised. 2. Stop BOINC. 3. Open up Notepad or another PLAIN TEXT editor and type the following but substituting your account key for the xxxx part between the authenticator tags.
4. Save it as account_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml making sure it doesn't pick up a .txt extenstion. 5. Put it in the BOINC directory. 6. Restart BOINC. |

Hi Kathryn,
----------------------------------------Good one for a WCG Start Here forum FAQ together with Didactylos' solution. Think the WCG version of the BOINC installer takes care of creating that file and attaching, so it's something specific to those coming from outside WCG or those choosing the vanilla BOINC and doing e.g. a clean install. There's a third way btw.... Rename the user account to something BOINC takes e.g. in this sample 'Forte', attach WCG to BOINC and rename the member account back 'Forté'. Can be done in the My Grid > My Profile page. cheers Note to self: The BOINC for Windows Help page needs review. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/reg/ms/viewThankYouAll.do?platformPick=win

Since I had already started it from the command line, that XML file already exists with the correct info.
So, I closed BOINC. And restart it with the BOINC GUI and all is well. Thanks! |
