![]() The Canary Project The Canary Project produces visual media, events, and artwork that build public understanding of human-induced climate change and energize commitment to solutions. Following are the key strategies we employ: Visualize global warming in compelling ways that leverage data and communicate a sense of urgency. Integrate the tools of art with those of science, education, mass communication and other disciplines that enhance our ability to engage diverse audiences. Investigate questions lying at the root of our current ecological crisis and provoke reflection on those questions. Cultivate media attention to further inform a broad public and to create excitement around the issue. Distribute information on concrete actions people can take to cut carbon emissions and lead people to take more action. History Our organization began in 2006 as a project to photograph landscapes around the world most acutely affected by global warming. Since its founding, Canary has expanded its initial undertakings to support a wide variety of other artists working at the intersection of art and ecology. As we diversify our programming to reach a broader audience, we also remain committed to deepening the outreach component of our inaugural body of work, Canary Project Photos: The Landscape of Climate Change. Needs & Context Correcting misconceptions about climate change and mobilizing society to build a more sustainable future will require a concerted effort from all sectors of society. We believe art has an important role to play in this process, particularly when executed in collaboration with other disciplines and when benefiting from the organizational strengths of an entity such as The Canary Project. Art has the capacity to penetrate received notions, generate media attention and create lasting visceral impact - all of which can be a more effective catalyst to action than mere rational apprehension. To our knowledge, we are one of only two organizations in the U.S. exclusively dedicated to producing art about climate change (the other is Precipice Alliance). What sets us apart is our dedication to working collaboratively and reaching diverse audiences. Through distribution of action packets, on-line weblinks to resources, direct engagement with audiences and the incorporation of solutions such as recycling into the works themselves, we link all of our projects to concrete steps people can take to address climate change.,,,, |

British Antarctic Survey - Homepage
British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is one of the world's leading environmental research centres and is responsible for the UK's national scientific activities in Antarctica. Press Release - Lasers from space show thinni... and Antarctic ice sheets The most comprehensive picture of the rapidly thinning glaciers along the coastline of both the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets has been created using satellite lasers. The findings are an important step forward in the quest to make more accurate predictions for future sea level rise. Reporting this week in the journal Nature researchers from British Antarctic Survey and the University of Bristol describe how analysis of millions of NASA satellite measurements* from both of these vast ice sheets shows that the most profound ice loss is a result of glaciers speeding up where they flow into the sea. The authors conclude that this ‘dynamic thinning’ of glaciers now reaches all latitudes in Greenland, has intensified on key Antarctic coastlines, is penetrating far into the ice sheets’ interior and is spreading as ice shelves thin by ocean-driven melt. Ice shelf collapse has triggered particularly strong thinning that has endured for decades...... |

Catlin Arctic Survey
Patron: HRH The Prince of Wales From the Ice SURVEY DATA SUPPORTS RAPID ICE LOSS - LARGELY OPEN ARCTIC SEAS IN SUMMER WITHIN TEN YEARS New data, released today (15.10.09) by the Catlin Arctic Survey and WWF, provides further evidence that the Arctic Ocean sea ice is thinning, supporting the emerging thinking that the Ocean will be largely ice-free during summer within a decade..... The Catlin Arctic Survey, completed earlier this year, provides the latest ice thickness record, drawn from the only survey capturing surface measurements conducted during winter and spring 2009 ...more |

NASA Flies to Antarctica for Largest Airborne Polar Ice Survey
Research team heads south to investigate melting in ice-covered continent. It's off to Antarctica for the UND-operated DC-8 research jet as the aircraft sets out on a month-long mission-dubbed Operation Ice Bridge-to study ice sheets around the South Pole. The National Suborbital Research and Education Center (NSERC) airplane began the several hour trip from it's base at the Dryden Flight Research Center in California's Mojave Desert to Punta Arenas, Chile where it will be stationed for the next 30 days or so. The four-engine jet was called into service after a NASA satellite that previously measured ice thickness went offline earlier this year. Another similar satellite won't go into orbit until 2014 or 2015. But with so much focus on diminishing ice sheets, NASA didn't want to lose out on what could amount to be six years of lost research and experimentation. Previously, ICESat-I, the satellite that was recently decommissioned used laser beams to penetrate the ice all the way to the bedrock below to determine the thickness of the ice as well as its composition. It would take measurements on elevation and ice extent in both the arctic and Antarctic regions. |

24 October 2009
24 October 2009 Read the Invitation» What does the number 350 mean? What's the day of action? How can I get involved? How will this make a difference? October 24. Join the over 1000 communities worldwide who've been organizing for this day. Organize your own action in the place where you live, something that will make 350, that most important number, visible to everyone. This worldwide campaign focuses on the need to get below 350 parts per million of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere, the level considered safe by scientists. (We’re now at about 392 and rising.)... |
