ScienceWise - Science Magazine of the Australian National University
Core Data on Climate How the Great Barrier Reef Records Climate History Australia and New Zealand have recently signed up to the world’s largest ocean research program - The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP). IODP is a multi-national scientific collaboration aimed at extracting data from core samples taken at numerous points throughout the world’s oceans. Data from these cores can be used to answer a wide range of questions about everything from the processes that shaped the Earth’s surface to marine biology and the effects of climate change. Dr Mike Gagan of the Research School of Earth Sciences is one of the scientists involved in IODP. He’s currently preparing for an upcoming project to obtain core data from Australia’s Great Barrier Reef..... |

25th anniversary of the Bhopal disaster
Twenty-five years ago this week, in the early hours of Dec. 3, 1984, large amounts of water entered a tank at the Union Carbide factory in Bhopal, India. That water reacted with the 42 tons of methyl isocyanate inside, raising temperature and pressure so high that it began venting massive amounts of gas made up of methyl isocyanate, phosgene, hydrogen cyanide and more. The poisonous cloud swept through neighborhoods near the boundary wall, waking sleeping residents with burning throats and eyes, killing about 4,000 people in the first few hours. Over the next few years, the lingering effects increased that toll to about 15,000 dead, according to government estimates. A quarter-century later thousands of people are still grappling with the effects of the world's worst industrial accident and the continued contamination. Union Carbide was bought by Dow Chemical in 2001, and Dow claims the legal case was resolved in 1989, with responsibility for continued cleanup now falling to the local state government. District heating is very common household heating system (50 % according to Wikipedia) in Finland. In the north, heating is also required almost across the year. So here’s the idea finally implemented many of us have thought of. The heat produced by one computer hall is now transferred to the district heating system and can be used to heat up 500 single-family detached houses in our capital city. Till now the heat has been mainly (80 %) produced alongside with nuclear electricity. Anyway, here is how to solve the problem of cooling down server halls we all agree with.

Smart fridges - helping to cool the planet?
Over 3,000 npower customers are to take part in a major "smart grid" trial throughout 2010 designed to assess the effectiveness of so-called smart fridge technology capable of cutting power use from fridge freezers during periods of peak demand. Announced on the same day as the government released a major new study into the viability of smart grid technologies, the trial will see customers supplied with dynamic demand fridges and fridge freezers for free, in what will be world’s first residential test of the technology |
