Explorers begin epic Arctic trek see video

A British team has begun a gruelling trek to the North Pole to discover how quickly the Arctic sea-ice is melting.

Renowned Arctic explorer Pen Hadow and two companions were dropped onto the ice by plane 800km (500 miles) off the northern coast of Canada on Saturday.

During their 1,000km journey they plan to take measurements of the thickness of the ice.

It will be the most detailed survey of its kind this season, and should be completed in late May.....

Argentina's Perito Moreno glacier in Ande...ising global temperatures

Argentina's Perito Moreno glacier is one of only a few ice fields worldwide that have withstood rising global temperatures.

Nourished by Andean snowmelt, the glacier constantly grows even as it spawns icebergs the size of apartment buildings into a frigid lake, maintaining a nearly perfect equilibrium since measurements began more than a century ago.....

Mpingo Conservation Project

Mpingo, the East African Blackwood tree, is used to make clarinets and oboes, and is the medium of choice for local wood carvers. Its dark, lustrous heartwood is one of the most valuable timbers in the world. >>
The tree is under-threat from over-exploitation and could become commercially extinct. However it also has great potential to act as a flagship for conservation of the coastal forests and miombo woodlands of East Africa. >>
The Mpingo Conservation Project aims to conserve these endangered forests by promoting sustainable and socially equitable harvesting of mpingo and other valuable timber stocks.
Our work spans three major aspects:
• community forestry >>
• awareness-raising >>
and
• focused field research >>

The next 'moon landing?' Norway plans deep-sea CO2 storage.

The oil-rich nation believes a half-mile thick rock formation could store the next 600 years, or so, of CO2 emissions from Europe. Some say the science is not so clear
OSLO - Can the North Sea basin hold all of the carbon dioxide in Europe? Norway certainly hopes so.
At a high-level conference in Bergen last month, the oil-rich Nordic nation announced that it will work with Britain to study how the base of the North Sea could be used for carbon dioxide storage for European countries. It will also allocate nearly $200 million toward carbon capture and storage projects in the European Union.
Although some environmentalists aren't yet convinced of the long-term prospects of sequestering carbon dioxide emissions deep under the ocean, the idea has become something of a holy grail in the effort to stop global warming.
The joint British-Norwegian study will build a profile for the whole North Sea, assessing each countries' storage potential and projections of likely volumes and locations of carbon dioxide (CO2) flows. The conference in Bergen, where the plan was announced, took place in advance of December's United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen....

Following 'rock storage' and geological formation storage of CO2 very closely. Pipedream v.v. the speed it can take up CO2, it's an everlasting trickle storage. Olivine rock and sands is thought to have been one of the geological formations at surface that are were great sequesters in longer gone history to take it out the atmosphere. Now the cement industry does it the opposite direction.

Climate change is happening 'here, now': US report

The harmful effects of global warming are being felt "here and now and in your backyard," a groundbreaking US government report on climate change has warned.
"Climate change is happening now, it is not something that will happen decades or centuries in the future," Jerry Melillo of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Massachusetts, one of the lead authors of the report, told AFP--.

Himalayan glacier studies commence

The studies will begin with Imja lake in the Everest region

After a long gap, scientists in Nepal have embarked on the first field studies of Himalayan glacial lakes, some of which are feared to be swelling dangerously due to global warming.
In May, they completed the field visit to the first location, a lake in the Everest region, in a series of studies...

Re: World Environment News , Ecology websites etc

That's very interesting JP. Was reading of an Andes glacial lake that had already emptied out 4 times in a year, it does that in burst, where it normally did that only once annual. More melt water or more rain instead of snow, the exact cause was not established.
