Re: World Environment News , Ecology websites etc

The smiley is missing, txyankee :p (Actually last Friday we phoned around where corn was grown in the region and went to look near a place called Moscufo (a contraction of Mosca, meaning fly and Ufo]. Yes they're living there, not area 51. Anyway, you've seen the state of the US corn I'm sure in pictures. The little plot here was not different... the corn was only half formed. Last night we had the first decent rain in probably 3 months.

It aint true, and still it's happening: http://nsidc.org/news/press/20120827_2012extentbreaks2007record.html

PS, read that one aspiring VP did the marathon in 2:50 hours. Then Foxnews started to fact-check and take his convention speech apart [yes Foxnews of all]. Don't listen to the politicians, who's wallet is riding on BAU [Business as usual].

Re: World Environment News , Ecology websites etc

Here in Portugal it has barely rained since November 1st 2011 when there were actually floods. Not to mention the country is burning with fires everywhere due to high temperatures and lack of rain.

Re: World Environment News , Ecology websites etc

Humanities "ability" to mess up the ecology are well exampled around the world, such as introducing dogs and bull-frogs to the Australian landscape, the US also no stranger with man introduced species of fish and plants that displace/overwhelm any indigenous ones. This is another example [though the usual ''we did not know then'' may apply].
Early Worm Gets the Bird

The ice that covered much of North America, ten thousand years ago, may have wiped out all the earthworms, if they were here at all - because there is no fossil evidence to suggest otherwise. But when European settlers first arrived, they brought earthworms with them; either inadvertently in the ballast of their ships, or perhaps intentionally for agricultural purposes. These are the earthworms we see today in our gardens and on sidewalks after it rains. But they are creating a problem, particularly in the forests of the northern and northeastern U.S. and parts of Canada. A new study by Dr. Scott Loss from the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Centre in Washington, has found that as the earthworms rapidly deplete the layer of leaf-litter on the forest floor, one species of songbird is in decline. The forest floor no longer supports the plant life essential for the ground-nesting ovenbird to hide its eggs from predators. It is estimated that 80 percent of these forests have been invaded by the invasive earthworm, resulting in a 25 percent decline in ovenbirds.

Re: World Environment News , Ecology websites etc

"CO2 is good for plants" is the [you know who] mantra, when studies have shown that the fossil fuel burning by-product is of the wrong type [the isotope signature] and it's proven that nutritious values of wheat has dropped some 8 percent and other cultivars [those we eat] even have dropped up to 80 percent, yields falling too and GM modding around us wont rescue us [how would we ever if today there's a billion of us malnourished or permanently hungry]. And now for the not so good news touching us "haves": The inner city dwellers better get out [over 50% of the world population now lives in cities]. It seems the chance of your children developing forms of autism [or before that in the womb] due to air pollution is 3 times as hi. Are you living near a motorway, or is your child's school near one of those 50,000-100,000 cars per day routes?: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-20493360

CO2 is good for you... right, that fairytale is for those who do believe in the supernatural. Puny man is succeeding, hands down, or as that not so funny book is titled "The God Species" is expanding on (by Mark Lynas).

BTW those enormous plastic fields floating in the ocean gyres... any idea what chemicals end up at the top of the food chain [Homo Sapiens Sapiens]. http://coastalcare.org/2009/11/plastic-pollution/ Of course those out on their idyllic hill [Say near Odiham, where the RAF is jetting exhaust from their Airforce planes] go "It's not in my back yard... see not, hurt not".

Have a nice and healthy future (but we all have to work for it, not leaving it up to others).
