Go wireless. 802.11g routers are almost free. Just make sure that it supports WEP2 encryption. If you follow the destructions and set up properly, it should be as secure as a hardwired connection. I use a 4-port router and hang switches off of each of the ports for different locations. I even have one old router cascaded off one of the switches - didn't want to run another cable. This works fine for internet access but you need some special kung fu to do networking/file sharing off of the cascaded router. Never got that figured out. Thanks twilyth but I solved that problem for now. Now the problems are that my UPS is severly overloaded (ordered a new 1500VA) and my 24 port KVM switch only seems to have 8 "living" ports (ordered a new one).Grid computing gets expensive!!!!!! ![]() ![]() |

The reason for the KVM isnt the cables, its to save on the monitors. For the most part, you only need a monitor/mouse/keyboard durring boot.

after initial setup, I use remote desktop, putty, & Boinc View to talk to my in-house farm, and my remote machines aren't headless. This significantly reduces the power & heat load. It does require a good firewall to the outside world.

after initial setup, I use remote desktop, putty, & Boinc View to talk to my in-house farm, and my remote machines aren't headless. This significantly reduces the power & heat load. It does require a good firewall to the outside world. All my machines are used for other things as well, so I don't have the option of the economy of headless machines. I do set them to power down the monitor when idle and have 7 of 11 machines at the house on LCD instead of CRT now. That has helped with the electric bill. As prices drop on the LCDs, I will have them on everything eventually. The last 2 I picked up were 19" widescreen with DVI for $129 each. At work, I have an 8 port KVM that I use with 1 KB , mouse and Monitor to manage our phone (VOIP PBX)), voicemail and GM Servers. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
