Kaspersky Anti-Virus

I looked through the FAQ section of the forums and looked at the Kaspersky listings, but they don't really seem to help very well. I have Kaspersky Anti-Virus running all the time to protect my computer and recently got a new computer to be used as a donator, which also has Kaspersky on it. The problem is that Kaspersky seems to be blocking World Community Grid from doing its job. WCG will download a work unit and act like it's about to calculate and then it has to reconnect to the server again and downloads another work unit. This only started happening after I decided to uninstall AVG and get Kaspersky, I've also had previous problems with Outpost Firewall (not currently installed and never solved), so it's pretty obvious to me that Kaspersky is the culprit.

In order to continue donating work I need to be able to run it with Kaspersky (preferably without having to commit to just the BOINC version), so how do I configure Kaspersky to allow World Community Grid to do what it needs to do? I've tried adding the UD.exe file to the Trusted Applications list, disabled monitoring of ports 80 and 43, and adding server.worldcommunitygrid.org to the Trusted URLs for the Web Anti-Virus.

Re: Kaspersky Anti-Virus

Are you saying BOINC works? Because if so, you should go with that. WCG are withdrawing support for the old UD agent over the coming months.

Re: Kaspersky Anti-Virus

I just tried the one on BOINC and it works. What does "withdrawing support for the old UD agent over the coming months." mean? Like, does that mean will no longer support the separate agent from BOINC for the rest of WCG's days or does it mean temporarily?

joneill003, yes it was a typo ;). I meant to say 443 =o). Thanx.

Maybe terse, but why members coming to the board have to display they have not bothered to visit the Start Here FAQs or the Member News or the Known Issues section? http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=15715

Yes, UD agent is on the way out and no its not only Kasperky.... its bloody Windows in-build security that's a dog. Fought for over a week a serious problem that turned out to be a new race condition between something MS fixed in August patches and my old trusted Avast antivir.

I've installed UD on two computers today. One was running Kaspersky 6.0.2.621 and the other computer was running Shaw Secure/F-secure and I had to disable both antivirus programs before installing. so I would not go as far as saying it is windows built in problem.

BOINC cpu throttling is still pretty crappy in my opinion compared to UD. It would be nice if the WCG project management team offered the upcoming next generation UD open source client as an alternative to BOINC. see http://www.grid.org/ for more info

Re: Kaspersky Anti-Virus

The "upcoming next generation UD open source client" doesn't exist. When eventually it shows up, if it is based on old UD technology then we don't want to support it in any way, shape or form. If it's based on BOINC, then I think we will laugh at them. If it is entirely new, then I will be very, very surprised (and we still won't want it, because who wants to test untried software?).

As an alternate throttle to the bouncy BOINC version, visit the Start Here forum and find information there on ThreadMaster for Windows. It works on multi-core machines too, what UD does not.... just one at the time.

Thx for the info. I'll stick with UD for now.

Configuring ThreadMaster seems like a pain for the Average Joe even though the instructions are clearly outlined @ http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=16084

not to mention every other non-WorldCommunityGrid BOINC project that runs will have to be input into the registry entry which I don't feel like figuring out.

Also if the version number gets updated e.g. if wcg_faah_autodock_5.41_windows_intelx86 changes to 5.42 I will have to update my registry entry which I really don't care about worrying about.

Despite multi-core capabilities of BOINC. My two reasons to use UD over BOINC at this point:
#1 I prefer UD because I can throttle cpu usage easily by setting the wcgrid_max_cpu variable to x% and #2 I can tell my non-techie mom to install it on her laptop computer set the cpu throttle easily without having to monitor project changes or revising registry settings.
