Re: Computers tips

FWIW I believe disabling updates totally is a bad idea. A better solution might be to set it to ask you about which updates to download and install. That way you can skip the ones that aren't really necessary but still install the critical ones.

Oh I agree, I update frequently, my plan (it's still new only got it a day or so ago) is to reenable services while I sit here, and run a windows update, then check what it wants to update and pick and choose. This might seem like a bit much effort, but if it's a few percent faster for BOINC then i'll bother. Also it's handy for gaming, not that an I7 can't handle pretty much anything out there, but ya never know.

Re: Computers tips

If you are selling your computer or giving it away, you need to make sure your files cannot be accessed. Luckily, there is specialized software that is made solely for this purpose.

Super Shredder

is a good file shredder, and even better, it’s free. A file shredder permanently deletes and removes any file. Once a file has been shredded, no recovery software can retrieve or restore those files. Think of it as a paper shredder, a computer file shredder works in the same way except it shreds the document on the computer.
You can shred a single file or you can wipe the entire hard drive using shredders

Of course there are other file shredders that are great applications: File Shredder , Wipe and delete and DBAN are well-known shredders.

Re: Computers tips

If your computer supports a second hdd (or already has one) the second hdd MUST be a physical drive not just a partition on the first hdd - then move your system pagefile to the second hdd as well as all pointers to the temp file folder - I have done this on about 500 PC's and every one has seen a significant performance increase., some as much as 25% - note: don't forget to delete the original pagefile on the system drive

Re: Computers tips

I was glad when Jean Pierre mentioned 'optimize for performance' .
I have some questions about win XP, about the optimizing:

Control panel > system > advanced > 'settings' (under performance

Ok, from the first tab here I see where I can choose between performance and appearance, I selected performance.

Now, when I go to the next tab from here,

... >advanced

You can choose processor scheduling for either programs or background services, and memory usage for either programs or system cache.

(This is where I have these questions)

Right now these are both for programs, but isn't Boinc a non high priority schedule, running as a background service?
What about memory usage, doesn't the system cache optimized over programs help boinc run faster?

Re: Computers tips

Ok

These 2 articles explain the two settings in question in detail. The first article explains that the processor scheduling option controls the time slice each thread gets before another thread can preempt it for processor time. Since the science applications invoked by BOINC run at the lowest possible priority regardless of which setting is selected this option is unlikely to make any real noticeable difference on most machines although it may make the operating system appear less responsive to user input (such as mouse clicks or keyboard inputs). The second article explains that the system cache option allocates more memory for file caching. Since most WCG science applications don't do much disk I/O, selecting system cache is more likely to degrade performance for BOINC/WCG than improve it.

Re: Computers tips

Optimize Folders

If you have a folder filled with many of the same kind of file (MP3s, pictures, etc.), then you probably notice that it can be a little…well, sluggish, sometimes when it comes to displaying everything.

That green status bar up top couldn’t be moving any slower, could it?

Did you know that you can optimize folders to make them load their contents faster?

Here’s how!

Just Right-Click on the folder you want to speed up and click Properties. Select the Customize tab. Under “Optimize this folder for” choose the setting that best describes the contents of the folder. If you’re looking to affect the entire folder and subfolders, put a check next to “Also apply this template to all subfolders”.

Press OK and you’re all set!

If you’d like to reverse this, just follow the same steps and put the optimization selector back to General Items and take the check mark off the subfolder option.

Re: Computers tips

Google Images Basic

Ah, Google images. What would I ever do if I didn’t have a ready repository of “ready to be Photoshopped” pictures at my disposal? Problem is that awhile ago Google switched over to a different display method, and I don’t like it all too much.
There is an option to turn if off, though!
Scroll to the very bottom of your Google image search and click on Switch to basic version.

It’s 2009 all over again! If you want to go back to the regular way, simply scroll back to the bottom and click Switch to standard version.

Windows of course, Vista/W7, don't know about XP, the top tip here would be which of the 5 options applies to the BOINC Data Directory, in particular focused on the 6600 files or so that each CEP2 slot contains. Template to apply to the sub-dirs thereof too. Default is: General Items.
