Nix backup schemes.

I am looking for a backup/restore scheme for FreeBSD (5.x and mac server osx) that will allow a bare metal restore to new hardware. Anyone know of a good white-paper on it?

As a test I figure I will take my 5.x box Move it to some virtual machine (Fair test for moving OS to new hardware.) then try to update it to the newest 6.X OS and see if my programs still run. (I have been told they will.

Any suggestions on how to get this done? I figure I will use a tarball or perhaps a dump to get the files. (If tarball what files do I do? Do I just start at root or do I do each mount by itself?)

Any suggestions?

Current hardware is P4 running a SCSI raid.

I will be going to a windows virtual server server.
