Re: Beta test of August 29

We did not send out any BETA work units as originally planned yesterday. We did not receive enough results back from our alpha test to give it a final version approval ready for the public. I will try to keep you posted on the progress towards beta.

Re: Beta test of August 29

Ok, beta should be starting within the next hour. Please remember it is bandwidth intensive.

Re: Beta test of August 29

The following was posted earlier today.
We have just now started a beta test for the next project. This beta test involves large files 77MB (after compression) downloads and 13 MB (after compression) uploads. This beta test is for Linux only, requires BOINC version 5.8 or higher and requires a min of 85000 bytes/second measured download (this is 756kbps rounded down). You can compare this value of 85000 against the value of <bwdown> inside of <net_stats> inside of the client_state.xml file. If you have 85000 or higher then you should qualify for this beta work.

I suppose this is the project that was to be available for download a few hours ago. I'm not running anything *nix at the moment, but I took a look at my <net_stats> figure because I considered loading Xandros. I am on AT&T FastAccess DSL Extreme (6.0 Mbps) and my figure is 64880. The requirement for 85000 or higher will severely limit the number of beta testers IMHO.

Edit for actual figures:
<net_stats>
<bwup>19626.7</bwup>
<bwdown>64880.6</bwdown>

Second Edit: I checked my BOINC Manager | Messages and found "8/30/2007 8:20:26 PM|World Community Grid|[file_xfer] Throughput 37288 bytes/sec".

Re: Beta test of August 29

Vester,

We know that these limits will reduce the pool of available beta testers. However, there is a trade-off between limiting the number of participants and getting a backlash from folks who are upset that we sent them a workunit that takes a long time to download.

We are working with BOINC to get a new option available in your preferences. It would allow you to specify your average daily data downloaded. This would allow a user to say, for example, that they want to average about 25MB of data downloaded per day on their computer. Once a feature like this is broadly available we will not need to use strict bandwidth limits.

By the way - for those who have slower measured bandwidths but want work for this project anyway, you can do the following to get a workunit.

1) Stop BOINC
2) Open client_state.xml in your BOINC install directory.
3) Find the <bwdown> field and increase it to a number like 90000
4) Start BOINC

You will report back to the server the higher bandwidth and be able to get work for this project. Please note that this field will get updated as you download additional data files.

Re: Beta test of August 29

Thanks, knreed. I was hoping you had made a mistake. For anyone who hasn't thought about it, 8 MB/s aDSL is 88100 bytes/sec assuming an ATM+TCP overhead of 14% and 8 Mb/s is 70450 (14% overhead). My ISP advertises 6.0 Mb/s or Mbps, so one would need a connection of about 8.8 Mb/s to meet the project's minimum connection speed.

Re: Beta test of August 29

There are 21,974 records in the host table with expavg_credit > 5 and meet the download requirement. There are a total of 58,662 records in the host table with expavg_credit > 5 in total. This means that about 37.4% of computers attached will be able to meet the bandwidth requirement.

Re: Beta test of August 29

Meaningful numbers are hard to find, but according to Wiki which references a four year old report in Telegraph.com.uk:
According to market research company IDC, 25% of servers and 2.8% of desktop computers ran Linux as of 2004.

Are the 21,974 all beta testers running Linux, all beta testers running Linux or Windows, or is that the collection of all members? My point is that 21,974 times an optimistic 25% running Linux would be just under 5500 members (running Linux and meeting the bandwidth requirement), and then one must consider how few choose to beta test.

I don't want to be negative here, but I'm running a Windows Beta test at this time and I am jealous of the ones who qualify for this beta. crying

Re: Beta test of August 29

Sorry I mislead you there. The numbers I quoted were the BOINC computers in total - not just beta testers and not just Linux.

We should be starting a beta test for the Windows version sometime in the next 24 hours (assuming all goes well with the testing in development).
