Not the point system actually means anything but if it is to encourage participation it is most certainly severly broken.
We have many people masquerading as a USER when in fact they have thousands of machines crunching the data. That makes the contribution of those of us who are real Users (as in one person) look rather insignifincant. This acts as a disencouragement to particpate. I would suggest that there be a limit of 10 devices per user to ensure that this bastardization of the rankings stop. Any user with more than 10 devices automatically should become a team. Any other way results in Rankings which just stupid and a lie. One so-called user has 2500 computers crundhing data, now real one person user should be ranked against that. |

I show 55 devices in my profile but in reality I have 4 rigs crunching. Why should I be penalized for that and forced away from my team. As far as users with thousands of computers. Would like to see many more. Sure wouldn't want to see them penalized or discouraged. I care not if my contribution looks insignificant or not. Think WCG would have major problems with outraged crunchers if anything of the kind was implemented.

Sorry, All Knowing Eye - some users ARE responsible for hundreds or thousands of computers.
Perhaps, in some future website version, there will be a feature that allows comparisons based on number of active computers. It's not a high priority, though. |

Any user with more than 10 devices automatically should become a team. All Knowing Eye, Even if many "individual" people would feel as a problem to compete against "organizational" userids (which does not seem to be the case so far) your proposed solution would not make sense: by definition a team is a group of 1 or more userids; so there would always be one userid in such teams which would own most machines of this organization (and thus, listed in the "member" races). Added to that, your reasoning would forbid everybody in those organizations to crunch under their own name in the team of their organization (which is illogical). Last point (for this post only, because there are other arguable matter in your post): your homework is incomplete. In a few minutes I could find one such userid showing 11,439 devices in its stats! And believe it or not it is beaten by 9 others in Sunday's daily stats, some with as "few" as 65, 137 or 200 devices... Cheers. Jean (with only one P4 2.4 GHz showing as 2 devices, UD and Boinc). |

Hi All,
Just my 2 penoth or cents, I'm a linux distro person who just loves trying out new distros, as such I'm listed as having 21 machines. In reality I have just one crunching with my latest linux distro. I would love to have 21 machines just to get through some more work units quicker and get the results back to the scientists ( which is ultimately what this is about in my opinion ). I do have a team with just 3 other people in it and we all consider that the real goal is crunching and the points a bit of fun. After all some it systems guys could have 10,000 machines and our team of 4 would never catch his single user contribution. But that said I don't care. Sorry if you don't agree with this viewpoint but at the end of the day it's the overall total of units crunched by every single p.c that is the phenomenal output of this community grid that everyone should be proud to be a part of. Vester, "All Knowing Eye" has been participating using the UD client (nearly 2 years of runtime). His posts may have been a little antagonistic, but calling him a troll isn't productive.
Besides, his posts have sparked some interesting discussion. |

Vester, "All Knowing Eye" has been participating using the UD client (nearly 2 years of runtime). In that case he should know that the number of devices is the number of installations of the program, not the number of computers. Anyone who posts messages about sensitive topics to cause controversy in an online community is a troll. You are refering to his "Boinc Damaging the Environment" topic. I'll go away again. I can't tolerate this place. ![]() |

I'm sorry you feel that way, Vester. And I know what you mean - forum unpleasantness can be truly poisonous.
But I'll leave you with an old cliché: "Try not to give offence, and try not to be easily offended". This "meta-rule" pretty much sums up all the other rules, and is a recipe for forum harmony. |

"Try not to give offence, and try not to be easily offended" Excellent very easy quick reminder (my dictionary also says "aide-mémoire", do you really use that in English?) for a better forum communication. Cheers. Jean. |
