Since, in the wake of DDDT, there's been a lot of disagreement about what graphics are appropriate for WCG projects, I want to suggest that a set of standards be developed which requires projects to display only docking diagrams and calculations.
----------------------------------------WCG needs to be as neutral as possible in its presentation if we expect to add new members and keep the devices we already have. Screen savers that invite controversy have no place here - even if some people don't see the reason for the controversy. WCG has grown because it does it's work with professionalism and decorum. This isn't the time to change a winning formula. ![]() ![]() |

I think the graphics are fine, especially since they are not required to do WCG science.
----------------------------------------We should be here for science. This will be another item to stir the proverbial pot and detract from someones ability to deal with the science of the projects. Let it rest.

This isn't the time to change a winning formula. Thank you twilyth. Until the DDDT graphics, I had no reason not to ass-u-me that there was a standard. The Mission Statement certainly appeared to be clear to me. I greatly support the DDDT project and will continue to run it, along with all WCG projects, but I found the graphics to be a first in what could be a disturbing trend. Subsequent comments in other threads like, “WCG is a hoster of projects, not the owner ...” only tend to increase my concern. I am reminded of an old Middle Eastern parable. To paraphrase it, “If you let the camel’s nose in the tent ... soon the whole camel will be in the tent”. Cheers, twilyth!! <dataman> ![]() |

the screensaver had the best intentions behind it. the graphics are pretty good and i respect the 'no hate' message, the kids and their teachers too.
----------------------------------------in spite of all that it still overwhelming, vague in application, and a little negative in itself. i suspect it raises so many issues such as sex, war, drugs, jail, crime, the law etc., that it just makes people feel a bit nauseated. all this on top of the nasty viruses we hope to kill ![]() i'm not sure a firm policy is necessary but i think these points should be looked at. I suspect that many members enjoy the graphics as a part of the experience of shared computing. I used to enjoy the qraphics, though I did not understand them for the years that I did seti@home. Nowadays the opportunities for shared computing are more practical and less romantic! I support the idea of some standards for graphics. I am amazed that the rubbish for Dengue project required downloading fifteen meg in order to fill the screen with maps too small to be readable, a whole lot of pale grey courier text, and a minute docking image. I understand the graphics to be re-sizeable, but have not succeeded in doing so, within the two minutes that I gave the effort to try.

Don't worry, you didn't download 15 MB. Downloads are compressed, and the files (actually about 12 MB uncompressed) shrink to a mere 1.7 MB for transfer.
