I have to turn boinc off as I cannot have it as a screen saver at work with the word "sex" in big letters everywhere. Seems a shame. Tone down the graphics or I will leave WCG off my work machine for good. Visit your human resources/personnel department sometime. Ask them to show you your own file. I figure that they have a data field or box in their employee history called "SEX". It will have the values M/Male or F/Female in it. There is probably SEX in every employee record.Just wondering.

Please don't try to bring logic into this.
Those who will object without investigating are unwilling to change their closed minds anyway - all that will happen is that they will become more determined to have their own petty way. Try looking at it from the point of view taken by the vast majority of the population - a computer is a rival with more intelligence that they themselves possess, and anything "unusual" to do with a computer is automatically related to porn or viruses. |

Nice spin on two definitions of the same word, Retsof!! But I doubt if Tim will ever get that audience with his HR department. The decision will already be made. Let me propose the argument this way. Suppose I owned a local coffee shop ... not the only coffee shop ... and I HATED “red shoes”. Would I post a sign, “No one served wearing red shoes”? Probably not as: 1. I would lose the customers wearing red shoes and customers are what I want. 2. Some other customers, who could care less about “red shoes”, would not enter because of the pickets waving banners protesting my aversion to “red shoes”. 3. Someone would sue me under some CA law prohibiting discrimination against “red shoes”. It would just be a bad business decision despite my thoughts on “red shoes”. I think this is similar. It just drives away some percentage of the populace because of their feelings about “red shoes” and I think customers (i.e. Results) are what WCG wants. For the record ... I have nothing against kids or “red shoes ... but I will probably get hate mail from both kids and “red shoes” lovers <hahaha> Cheers to all ... seems I had “four cents worth” today. I think it is very good that we discuss these issues here. <dataman> ![]() |

I run all my windows boxes as a service so I had to re-install one to see what the hubbub was all about. Nothing. Just like I thought.
As was mentioned, nothing distasteful. Maybe the scrolling comments by the 8th graders wearing the rose colored glasses could get annoying but other than that. (shaking my head) Most companies have policy regarding loading unauthorized screen savers just because of instances like this. Load boinc in service mode and forget about the screen savers. Set your monitor to shut off after 5-10 minutes instead. |

For me, I just don't want to have to defend the screen saver on the office machines I put it on every time someone walks buy and catches one of the statistics or sees the political writings. I don't doubt that most folks would understand after explaining it to them, but it's something that I'm not itching to do on a daily basis.
Because I run screensaver on computers in the public eye, I'd really prefer it to stay neutral and non-political. |

I figure that they have a data field or box in their employee history called "SEX". Hi retsof! The word itself seems to be so taboo in some countries (country?) that I would not be surprised if they used "gender" for that purpose. Regarding this debate I think that it would take many more years to see any progress than to find cures for these diseases. If you add the processing cost of all those graphics I suggest to replace them with a scrolling text simply saying something like "This computer is not idle, it is computing to help medical research." Edit: And by the way, all these English texts don't mean much to the majority of WCG members (look at the map in the Global Statistics). Cheers. Jean. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 2 times, last edit by JmBoullier at Aug 24, 2007 2:03:26 AM] |

The word itself seems to be so taboo in some countries (country?) that I would not be surprised if they used "gender" for that purpose. Have them check their dictionary (foreign language equivalent, if needed)Noun Singular gender Plural genders gender (plural genders) A division between classes or kinds. E.g., the common gender. The collection of behavioural characteristics associated with one’s sex; condition of being masculine, feminine or androgynous. (grammar) A division of nouns and pronouns (and sometimes of other parts of speech), such as masculine, feminine, neuter or common. (casually, to avoid confusion with sex in the sense of sexual relations) The sex of individuals (male or female). They'd better get out the scissors to clip out those bad words. Edit: And by the way, all these English texts don't mean much to the majority of WCG members (look at the map in the Global Statistics). Have you got any anonymous texts? They are taking over, since there are more anonymous members than members in ALL OTHER COUNTRIES COMBINED.Cheers. Jean. Because I run screensaver on computers in the public eye, I'd really prefer it to stay neutral and non-political. Why not just set the screensaver to (BLANK)? My monitor will go to stand-by after a set time, say 15 minutes, to save even more.I doubt whether the public will be too concerned about the little (B) BOINC icon.

What question were these kids asked to get responses like the ones I posted below? The reason I crunch is the hope that my small sacrifice can benefit the world as a whole through medical technology, not because of hate, gun control, war, or any of the other things mentioned in the posts. Hate did not give people the Dengue virus but love and unity can help stop it. All in all, I don't see how any of the quotes reinforce the goal of the project and I'm really disgusted that wcgrid would stoop to this level.
The easiest way to end hate is to have everyone be open-minded and accept people for who they are, no matter what race, religion, or sexual orientation. - Mitch S., age 14, Lanier Middle School, Houston, TX “You are the hater if you hate on someone based on their race or sexual preference.” - Jasmine H., grade 8, Lanier Middle School, Houston, TX Gun Control Gun control is an issue in the world that is very important. A lot of people have come face to face with a gun before, and not all of them walked away alive. My concern is about kids, guns, and school shootings. The reason kids die in school shootings is because our government allows guns to get too close to kids. Kids are getting bullied by popular kids, and they end up taking it out on everyone. Me, I am in a school where I see kids getting laughed at and see kids I want to help, but we all know that helping can affect our reputation. Also, the security level in schools is not as tight as it needs to be. Kids can just walk in and shoot at other students. Not many people seem to care enough to make a change. Care, change the laws, keep us safe. - Brandt, age 14, Lanier Middle School, Houston, TX A man should not be hated for his sexual preferences. Instead rewarded for the intelligence of his mind and nobility of his heart. - Ross C., grade 8, Lanier Middle School, Houston, TX |

----------------------------------------Nice research GATECHIE ... glad you have your "red shoes" on. <G> I see you are one of the '04 originals too. Keep up the crunching!! WCG has come a long way and its user community is one of the ways that makes it successfull. We are an "odd lot" here with many opinions. Thanks! <dataman> ![]() |
