Strange...
I do not see "sex" or "hate" or anything on my graphics. When I view the graphics on a DDDT job I see the map on the left, the current docking on the top right, but in the student writings window it is empty. Is the student writings area where all the sex and hate stuff is that people are talking about? If so, I wonder why mine isn't showing it. |

I played around with the images and if you rename the offending *.tga frames of the series of 17 to *.tgo, you wont get to see those, just a white box. If you duplicate the ones before the offending frames, you just will get to see that image a wee bit longer.
----------------------------------------2 of the left frames have a reference to the percentages of transmittal thru the intimate relations. The student texts has the other reference multiple times. Not found yet how to hide those.

I had to uncheck the project for the same reason. Hopefully the programmers can resolve the issue by just making the graphics like every other project. In the meantime I guess it is FAAH and HPF2. Done here as well......I had a visiting VIP question my screen saver. HPF and FAAH it is for me as well on the public boxes. |

Hey, thanks for this thread. I run all of my machines save one in an unattended mode and had never looked at the DDDT graphics. I must admit that I found them to be a bit “odd” for a WCG project. I have to agree with some of the posters in that anything that drives someone away from a project or the Grid is needlessly detrimental to both of them. This certainly could create problems for work-place users.
----------------------------------------I can see that comments from a naïve fifteen-year-old child may be interesting to a thirteen-year-old child but I fail to see what benefit it gives to their project. It could give some that faint aroma of political overtones. Oh well ... just my two cents worth. <dataman> P.S. Hey “LawerenceHardin” and “David Autumns”!!! It’s been a long time since we first started in 11/04. Glad to see that you both have stuck with it. I’m playing catch up! ![]() |

Dataman - I agree. WCG should be as neutral as possible. Most of the people who run this software don't visit the forum so workarounds aren't going to help. The screen saver shouldn't be a bill board for anyone's opinion. I think even the statistics are out of place. Mark Twain (I think) once said that there are lies, damned lies and statistics. But whether they are accurate or not is irrelevant - the only thing that should be displayed on the screen saver is the science. Anything more will invite criticism that could cost us clients. It's not worth it.
----------------------------------------Maybe this would be a good time to implement some standards as far as screen saver graphics for new projects goes. Any votes for adding this to the Suggestions thread? ![]() ![]() |

Maybe it's a cultural thing - to me, the comments look about as innocuous as comments get. They're bordering on platitudes.
World Community Grid is about a lot more than the science, so I'm pleased to see a broader, more informative screensaver. The implementation could be a little smoother, but this is the first graphics like this that WCG have done - they will learn, and improve. And if someone questions the text, then you have a perfect opportunity to explain what it's all about. Seize the opportunity! |

Maybe WCG should take a poll - send out an email to existing users to see what they think.
----------------------------------------I'm willing to bet that sys admins and the like who agreed to put WCG software on their machines did so with the expectation that they would get a screen saver showing only molecules and calculations - not opinions and statistics. But at this point I think it's clear that the objections to this screen saver are more than nominal. By virtue of that fact alone, the project programmers should be asked to change it to something that is more in line with what people signed up for. I run the software on my personal machines so I couldn't care less. But I AM concerned about all those machines running only at the pleasure of people who probably don't have your enlightened and cosmopolitan attitudes. ![]() ![]() |

i agree with twilyth. i certainly am crunching away at this too! but to put it as simply as possible:
----------------------------------------1. the 'messages' have nothing to do with dengue. we all love kids and their teachers, but maybe this is not the place. 2. of course i like the basic enthusiasm behind the project; but at the same time i think many just want to see the science at work instead of getting bombed with information. I'm crunching many boxes on this project. I would prefer more science-based graphics, but they don't bother me in the least personally.
----------------------------------------It does appear they bother some, and may present a problem for some at work. I agree with halfcard...the change of venue and attempt to get more involved is appreciated, but we don't want to discourage people from running this project (or perhaps WCG at all) because of this. The student writings/statistics are already on the UTMB website; perhaps we could just have docking calculations? [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Aug 23, 2007 11:51:21 PM] |

I see nothing repelling..
![]() Comparing to hpf and faah I find the graphics actually refreshing and certainly not distasteful. |
