Nobody else travelling at this time of the year I wonder
Here something quite interesting Worse on a plane: Oversized carry-on or jerk passenger?...... Worse on a plane : Crying baby or yappy dog Odds are that if you fly even a little, you've had to endure both of these airborne maladies at some point. The cranky infant whose general outlook on life is reflected by the 5 straight hours of bawling with the volume turned to 11. The ferociously yipping lap dog in the mesh-sided pet carrier that is build for little Fido's comfort -- and minimum sound insulation...... ![]() |

Time to post this
---------------------------------------- Santiago is a beautiful travel destination and the gateway to any major destination in Chile. It is an important hub as the capital and largest city in Chile, with a population of five million people. The city was founded by the Spanish Conquistador Pedro de Valdivia on February 12, 1541 who was one of the first conquistadors to visit Chile when he made his expedition south from Cusco with Diego de Almagro to search for wealthy empires. Santiago is one of Latin America’s most modern metropolitan areas, with an expansive and extremely convenient system of underground trains. iT is a spectacular place to visit or even live. When considering visiting Santiago, it is necessary to remember Valparaiso, which though it is only 74 miles northwest of the capital, it is everything Santiago is not. First of all, it is a beautiful port city, with spectacular ocean views to complement the backdrop of the Andes Mountains. It was nicknamed “the Jewel of the Pacific” (it’s name literally means paradise valley), and in 2003 was declared a World Heritage Site due to its stunning natural beauty, historical importance, and its unique architecture built upon steep hillsides. Viña del Mar is another must-see location on your visit to Santiago. This is Chile’s fourth largest city and its been nicknamed ‘ the garden city.’ Multiple beaches line the coasts to the north and south of Viña del Mar including Reñaca, Las Salinas, Miramar and Casino. A large number of visitors come each year to throw some money on the tables in their famous casino. They also host the Viña del Mar International Song Festival every year in the Quinta Vergara Amphitheater. Santiago is in an ideal location with access to stunning wine country and the beaches within an hour’s drive. It is a short distance away from some of the best skiing in Chile, and with its location in central Chile it is a wonderful starting point for any vacation in either the north to the Atacama Desert or Lauca National Park or the south, to the Lake District and Patagonia. Santiago’s international airport is flown by multiple major characters and there are domestic flights that can zip you around the country to see the highlights in no time. There are also flights, to and from Easter Island every day. Do some updated research on Santiago and the regions around it. This place is taking off as a beautiful destination that can be molded into whatever you want, whether that’s a wine tour, a ski vacation, rich cultural history, or a wild nightlife. Or maybe, for your Chile vacation , you’d like all of the above. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 29, 2010 2:26:07 PM] |

One of my students (college senior) is studying abroad this spring semester. I believe she is going to be in Santiago. She is tremendously excited -- with good reason!

Holiday Travel Revealed Through Foursquare Checkins [Infographic]
Holiday travel is almost as much of a tradition in the United States as the holiday’s themselves. Wanting to examine holiday travel trends from last years travel Foursquare created an infographic that shows how people traveled from Halloween until just after Christmas 2010. In the graphic planes, trains and automobiles (Steve Martin would be happy) were plotted out to show how people traveled and from which destinations they traveled. To compile their data Foursquare examined the two airports each traveler checked into (departing and arriving airports) and they did the same for train stations. To determine automobile traffic they then used checkins on major highways and roads to show how heavily trafficked major interstates have become during the holiday travel season. You’ll also notice that the team at Foursquare plotted out a timeline which shows the peaks that occur during Thanksgiving and Christmas and on a smaller level during New Years Eve. One thing missing is the number of checkins for each activity which would have been nice to examine in order to better understand what modes of transportation are chosen by the most people during holiday travel. Here’s the Foursquare travel infographic: |

We did a two week travel in USA west coast with a couple of friends in October. We drived through California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah.
----------------------------------------It is a very nice period of the year to travel. Temperatures are very pleasant, and there are much less tourists. National parks are much quieter and there is little traffic. I did a similar travel twice before, once in July and once in August and I really have appreciated the last one. As an example we had 30 degrees celsius max in Death Valley, compared to 51 a few years ago. ![]() |
