Welcome , now is the turn for the old sage to post as others don´t take holydays seems to be ![]() Hi sorry a little late with this but have had a rather busy time since coming back to Blighty. Here goes anyway CYPRUS - I'ts true what they say' it really is the Island of LOVE for all its problems!. There is so much to see as the Island is steeped in history having been occupied by many invaders, each one having left their mark on this beautiful Island surrounded by the crystal blue waters of the Med'. Between Paphos and Lemossal is an area called the antiquity trail where you can see the Temple of Apollo, Aphrodite's Rock and numeruos Roman and Byzantine Dwellings, as well as many old castles, normally a small charge of one Cypriot pound will give you access to these sites. A ride to the mountains ( about one hour ) will open up fantastic veiws acroos the Island and there you can visit the many vinyards and village wineries , The Monastry at Kyros is a must to see. inside is a museum showing wonderful Icons and other Religious artifacts whilst outside the locals set up market stalls selling a wide variety of their own grown fruits, wines, sweets, lace etc. The North of the Island was Invaded by Turkey in 1974 and is only accessable by showing your passport, Farmagusta (once the chief port ) is now a ghost city, no one is allowed to enter, veiwed through a telescope it is a very eerie place as you can see time as stood still there since it was evacuated in a hurry when the Turks invaded, trees now grow through buildings and up through the roads, whilst personal belongings, cars etc are where they were left. You are assured of a very warm genuine welcome reception from both the Greeks and Turks whereever you go even tho' the Island is divided We stayed in Lemossol the second city, Nicosia being the first, there was plenty to see and do and eating out was both inexpensive and a delightful experiance, I recommend a Village Meza, fish is in abundance everywhere and you get to choose from that days catch, hmm delicious. We arrived as the wine festival was coming to an end and had the luck to taste free of charge many of the local produced wines, I can recommend Commanderia a sherry like wine that has been fermented on the Island since the Crusaders came. I could go on but I think you have my drift now!, Visit Cyprus and you will go back again and again, Aphrodite certainly worked her charm on me I have fallen in love with this wonderful Island and its people. Yes Harold but not here
I haven´t been here and never would This amazing film of El Caminito del Rey in Spain a walkway built in 1901 to provide access to the sluice gate controlling water flow through a tunnel aquaduct system along the steep canyon walls. It fell into disuse in 1945. Not for the faint of heart |
