I'm running BOINC on 21 older machines (200 - 500 mhz processors) and almost daily at least one machine will fail to start BOINC after receiving a new WU. I can exit BOINC and restart and everything will be fine. Most of these machines are running Win98 (a couple run XP) and no other programs (no screeen savers, antivirus, no web surfing) they just crunch. I have also gone into my settings and manually set everything to max usage (VM, disk space, etc)
----------------------------------------Any suggestions while I await new work from WCG for these machines? Cheers.

Would you please post the messages from the BOINC Manager Message Log from one of these failures before you exit BOINC to clear it. Thanks. |

as far as i know the min cpu requirements for any projects that are active as of now require a p2 550+
13 of my machines are shut down for this fact... |

There are no error messages in the message center. When I've checked the message center everything there indicates things are normal. it just fails to actually start. Sometimes the WU's will freeze up while processing. restarting solves this also. I believe 266 is supposed to be the minimum processor speed for BOINC projects but even my 200s are crunching away. the only thing I've been nailed on so far was insufficient memory on one and insufficient disk space on another. problems easily solved.
----------------------------------------Cheers.

A key element in any Q&A is knowing the OSses (you told us already it's mostly W98) and the BOINC version, official or none official compile. It makes it much easier to associate particular quirks to particular versions. Is it a specific WCG project like FA@H or HPF2?
----------------------------------------Can you provide that info please and we'll see if their is something to recommend as solution.

I'm running BOINC 5.8.16 and am receiving work for faah and hpf2. I know there is a new version of BOINC but I've not had the chance to install it on my machines.
----------------------------------------The problem isn't major, just annoying, because a pc may just freeze and sit there for hours till I come home and check it. If/when WCG gets a new project that's good for these older machines then I'll go back to that anyway. Maybe by then i'll get some more doner machines that are faster. Cheers. ![]()

My thinking is that regardless whether the CPU speed is over or under, if you receive a job, it should just should process as the server checks during each handshake if the minimum specs are met. It's known that actual required specs and those on the System Requirements page have slight deviations. e.g. it's known that FA@H jobs are send to lower RAM machines (128mb free) than required (250mb free).
----------------------------------------The fact that you come home and check, the PC sitting there idle for hours suggests it's not a BOINC startup problem but a job startup or freeze problem. HPF2 is known to do that at times, but FA@H is not, so can you tell us which jobs are doing this (see my earlier post)? When it freezes it usually has already accumulated some CPU time, not 0:00:00. Suspend WCG in project tab, wait 30 seconds, and resume will usually make HPF2 move again.

I'll keep an eye on it and see. With faah in it's transition at BOINC it may be several days before I know. I'm thinking it has happened with both and there has been a number of times when the WU failed it's initial start, although under messages, everything looked normal.
----------------------------------------Also, I've now installed the new 5.10 version on my machines and the only problem I've witnessed in the past 24 hrs. is one machine that was getting bogged down with something (don't know if it was BOINC) restarted and it seems to be okay. I'll post again when I have more info. Thanks and have a great day. ![]()

Problem now only shows on my Gateway G6-350 running Win98 and HPF2. I closed WCG (which was in a paused mode) and the problem seems to have gone away.
----------------------------------------Thanks for the advice. Everyone have a great day. ![]()
