Re: project servers may be temporarily down...

I tried the following command in the BOINC v5.8.16 directory:

./boinc_cmd --host localhost --passwd PASSWD --get_results
...
...
connect: Connection refused
can't connect to localhost

I still have no idea what's wrong (although I really appreciate all the help) and boincmgr doesn't work for whatever reason. Arial font should work just fine.

This is the exact error:
(boincmgr:32442): Pango-WARNING **: shape engine failure, expect ugly output. the offending font is 'Arial Bold Not-Rotated 10'

Humor me, but its Quiz time: What are you entering in place of PASSWD bolded above?
a. That exact phrase PASSWD?
b. The 32 hex as found in the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file?
c. The simplified password you entered in place of the 32hex in the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file?

If you simplified the password, did you restart BOINC? Never tried it, but who knows does it remember the password it was started with.

On the display issue:

What language is your OS run in? Found a German and Italian article suggesting that during compiling of the XXXX package, the translation was not performed correctly. The reports highlighted different fonts. Think Didactylos is right. Rip the BOINC instance out and get a reliable version for your distro.... 5.4.11..... change to a popular Linux distro like Ubuntu might also do the trick.

The simplified password you entered in place of the 32hex in the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file.

I did not restart BOINC after editing the file. After restarting the client, I'm finally getting a different error both with the Debian package and the one installed from this site.

Authorization failure: -155

My OS language is English.

Per the BOINC FAQ
ERR_AUTHENTICATOR -155

The scheduler request host ID number doesn't match with the authenticator.
You are missing your authenticator key. Detach from and re-attach to the project.

Re: project servers may be temporarily down...

Everything is working great now... finally.

I think the problem this whole time had to do with the original command...

boinc -no_gui_rpc -attach_project http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org MYPASSWD

I think the '-no_gui_rpc' command was making it so boinc_cmd couldn't do its job.

* think a few CA's wipe sweat off forhead.
Since you opened this thread, go to first post, hit the little pencil next to title and insert with brackets [RESOLVED] in the post header and hit "Edit a Post" at bottom, so all know the case is closed.

cheers

Oh and yes i saw that command a few days ago. It think you have to omit the http:// part. The process tries a secure transaction which is not on http. If you look in the My grid > My profile page you see at bottom that BOINC Project URL: www.worldcommunitygrid.org . If the command is wrong, you wont get the account key to populate a local xml file. Without that no authorization/authentication.

Added: Word is, as long as the www.worldcommunitygrid.org string is part of the url, will it be able to proceed, but suggest to stick to the instructions by the letter.

The BOINC -no_gui_rpc is covered in a Bug Report:
Bug#362257: boinc-client: -no_gui_rpc option is poorly named and misleading

-no_gui_rpc
omits creation of the socket (a file as communication channel)
as required for the remote control ot the client. Consequently the client
cannot be monitored by external tools like GUIs (boincmgr etc.) or the console
command tool (boinc_cmd).

Re: project servers may be temporarily down...

Picking up on a discussion about fonts used in the BOINC for Linux, this interesting post came thru in case someone wonders about bad looks:

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=1021&nowrap=true#11782

I asked Rom about the font, he doesn't know.
But what is making Boinc Manager ugly in itself is X.

Berkeley has tried for the past couple of years to fight that Linux is using all kinds of interfaces for the X window. Since there's no X that will work across different distros, it is very hard for them to make a Manager that looks nice.

And now they have given up and opted for compatibility, not looks.

Sorry.

Edit: I just managed to change the look of Boinc Manager by adjusting the font size that my Linux is using.

I'm using Mepis, based partially on Ubuntu.
I went to my Mepis X Windows Assistant, General, Set relative size of text to 75dpi, Applied and restarted X (CTRL+ALT+Backspace).

BOINC Manager looks a whole lot nicer now!

&
Oh, decreasing from 96 to 75 dpi makes all fonts smaller (and uglier) but NOT that of the BOINC manager ...

I ask myself, why all GUI apps I have (but BOINC Manager and xpdf) look good or have at least normal, readable smooth fonts ...even xsane and gimp with rather dull text GUIs don't have such jaggied fonts.

Re: project servers may be temporarily down...

That's not the whole story - there's an issue with the version of GTK being used.
