Problems with BOINC client.

i was directed to post in this forum after an administrator has been unable to help me fix a problem. I have downloaded the BOINC client to my work computer but have been unable to connect to any projects with the error of project temporarily unavailable showing up.

Re: Problems with BOINC client.

Hi decepticon
Could you give us a bit more information so that we can help you?
1. What operating system (WinXP, Linux, etc.)
2. What release of BOINC have you installed.
3. Would you cut/paste the messages leading up to and including the error message from the BOINC manager.
That should give us a start on resolving this for you.
Thanks.

Re: Problems with BOINC client.

The proxy server (assuming work connection) must allow a secure upload via socket 443. Is this allowed and is permission granted by the company?

We assume that you have successfully attached BOINC to worldcommunitygrid.org via tools - attach to project

What WCG projects have you checked?

It might be worth posting a few BOINC messages here so we can see what is going on. Only FAAH and HPF2 are currently running and have workunits. Some others recently finished.

Re: Problems with BOINC client.

hi decepticon,

strano... could not find posts by you from before today:

At your own peril, will you please talk to your system administrator at work to see what security, particular firewall and proxy features might be in place. BOINC needs to be able to use port 80 and 443 outward to WCG to make a secure connection at IP 129.33.89.134 (129.33.89.133 for none secure).

If you open a command window (Start Menu, Run, type 'cmd' and enter) and type "ping 129.33.89.134" and enter, it might already tell you if you can get thru at all.

All your parameters are fine and now BOINC is trying to first time retrieve the preferences from the WCG website which are usually the defaults.

Also, will you visit the Projects Tab and see if WCG is listed as project. If so, select it and hit the 'Update' button in left margin of the agent. (that's in the advanced view as the WCG package first opens in so called 'simple view')

WCG is definitely running and if you check My Grid > My Projects on the website, you should see 4 projects listed of which Genome Comparison and Help Cure MD are finished. Soon a few more new phases and projects will be added.

Re: Problems with BOINC client.

Hi

thanks for the fast reply. Id much prefer not to talk to my system admin about breaching firewalls, but did try to ping the address given to no luck. (operation kept timing out) is there any ways to bypass this? (enabling port 80 and 443)

In other words you are saying that you have loaded WCG un-officially without your companies permission....not a good idea!

Scribe is quite right. In many companies, running unauthorized software can get you fired! If, however, you have their permission, there is no way around enabling ports 80 and 443.

Re: Problems with BOINC client.

I should perhaps add that running WCG without permission breaks the WCG licence agreement. Does your company give you implicit permission to install software? If you don't have explicit permission (the best way) then check your computer use policy. Most companies only allow work related software to be installed, if they allow it at all.

Ports 80 and 443 are the normal HTTP and HTTPS ports, they are not normally blocked. I am inclined to think you need to configure a proxy. Speak to your sysadmin.
