[RESOLVED] project servers may be temporarily down...

I'd like to get involved in a project but I've not been able to connect to the server for at least a day now.

My BOINC client and manager versions are both 5.8.17-2+b1 (Debian).

A scan of port 443 reveals that it is closed while port 80 is open. Adding a line to iptables doesn't change things.

Is the server really down or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks

Re: project servers may be temporarily down...

This is a frequently asked question.

The answer is here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=14222

edit: (And yes, you will have to open port 443.)

Re: project servers may be temporarily down...

I downloaded the SSL certificate to ~/BOINC, restarted the client, and now it's working great.

Port 443 is still reported as 'closed', but it's working nonetheless. Go figure...

Thanks

Re: project servers may be temporarily down...

The agent only makes outgoing connections. You don't need to open any inbound ports.

Glad you've got it working.

(nelsoc, please move to BOINC support. Thanks.)

Re: project servers may be temporarily down...

Sorry I posted this in the wrong category.

I'm not sure whether it's working or not. It says 'Resuming computation' and just sits there. CPU usage is at 0% and the device manager isn't picking anything up.

Re: project servers may be temporarily down...

Don't worry about the category, it's just housekeeping.

Run top and you should see a process called wcg_foo_bar_i686-pc-linux-gnu and it should be soaking up all your spare CPU. If not, please post the entire message log.

You may want to use the GUI BOINC Manager to control BOINC. It you are running headless, then you can run BOINC Manager on a different computer, and connect remotely.

Re: project servers may be temporarily down...

One of my slow machines has some coordination problems. If it gets stuck, I can sometimes exit the BOINC icon completely and restart the BOINC manager. It will then hook up to BOINC again and try communication.

My other AMD machines are similar to yours. They shouldn't have that problem. It may be something else.

What WCG BOINC projects have you selected? It is also a good idea to check the box to send other work if your project doesn't have any work. There are two running at the moment, FAAH and HPF2, but things can change at any time.

Has the cert problem been fixed, and port 443? Are there any new BOINC messages now that show anything else?

Re: project servers may be temporarily down...

Unfortunately, running top on 'wcg_foo_bar_i686-pc-linux-gnu' reveals no such process.

One thing the client complains about is 'Message from server: Invalid or missing account key. Visit this project's web site to get an account key.' There doesn't seem to be a way to get an account key from my project's page. I've been using my username in place of the key and it seems to work, but I don't know for sure.

The BOINC manager is useless to me. Whenever I launch it, pango complains about ugly fonts... the dialog boxes and graphics are all messed up.

The cert problem has been fixed, yes. Port 443 still shows up as closed but I added the appropriate lines to iptables and also tested stealthing on port 80--which worked--so the lines are correct.

Hello bathat,
If you go to My Grid - My Profile on the website. it should have your BOINC Account Key.

Re: project servers may be temporarily down...

something may be off in the account_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml file. Compare the line with <authenticator>0ff801cda57e5c375e678076e123e180</authenticator> Should show a 32 digit hex value identical to the BOINC account key in the My Profile page on website. You might want to try to detach and re-attach to WCG to fix that.
