All,
I've read a New Sientist artikel were they discovered that beer or at least some of it's chemicals fights cancer by preventing the DNA damage.. See the artikal you all have been waiting for: http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn6895 Ok the scientists state: "The total benefits and risks of beer with alcohol are still under consideration." Fair enough. When you've worked it out, give us a shout - we'll be in the Rose and Crown doing a bit of field research ![]() Let's fight cancer on two fronts, looking at the machines crunching with a beer in our hands. ![]() |

Beat me to it. I saw this on The Register. One quote from the article:
Lead boffin Sakae Arimoto-Kobayashi reckons the beer-borne chemicals "prevent the amines binding to and damaging DNA". Full "article" with link to the New Scientist is here |

You all are making me thirsty! I haven't been able to have a beer in over two months because of the antibiotics I am taking.
My preferences are for Pilsners and lagers, although I have found in my retirement that cheap is more satisfying than it used to be -- LOL. I tried brewing my own a few years back and have to say that I didn't brew a batch that wasn't pleasing. The biggest problem I had was maintaining a good temperature for the fermentation. I also found that it was difficult to obtain consistant ingrediants. Each time I would go to the shop to buy the malt extracts, hops and yeasts, I found that I couldn't get the same brand or type that I had used previously. Then there was the problem of having to drink it at home. I prefer to have my beer in a nice pub with the other "regulars". I have told the owner of pub that I frequent that it is my "living room". I also have to say that beer is meant to be consumed from a tumbler or a stein -- not directly from a bottle. Pouring it to form a nice head lets the aroma caress your nose and enhances the pleasure. One should also be provided with an absorbant coaster for their glass -- not a cocktail napkin -- I am not sure if that is a Southern US thing, but I had to train the bartenders at the pub I frequent in this. |

Ha! ha! Sounds just like a couple of guys I knew when I was growing up in the piney back woods. Them revenours (Treasury agents) took a dim view of thier activities. They got caught but they maintain thier innocents all the way to the federal hotel saying that all 4500 gallons of sour mash was for thier own medicinal uses. I feel sorry for anyone who ever drank any of those guys brew - it would peal the chrome off a bumper -- literally.
We used to shoot urainium bullets at each other across the way to keep our fued partners on thier toes but we all lived so far back in the woods everyone would have died of lead poisioning had it ever hit one of them. |

I, after the German fellow attempted to degrade or describe our
----------------------------------------discussions as if they were the Apex of Cretinism. (Good German Humor I am sure!) Felt that it might be fun to "Do a piece" on my favorite "Ale House". (Where, (not that I ever (OK once. Very Black. But Very Flat.) order it) they have 1or2 German Biers on tap.) ANYWAY. After eating a bit. (knowing the task at hand required it (For Safety)) I toddled off to the Pub (or Ale House) of my dreams. Armed with Camera and Notebook I was thinking of the "Shots" I would get and the marvelous Beers that I would be Drin- Sampling soon. I was beautiful drive with the Rivers swollen with storm and snow melt. The Wednesday traffic boggling up behind me as I Goggled at nature off the road. I was trying to open myself to angles of debate the I could hand insert to "Some theme" (that I hadn't come up with yet) that I would also ("receive somehow") expose the awful truth. That some parts of my country are enjoying a real exposure to the rest of the Worlds Wonderful Beers. (HAY! Great Domain Name!) ANYWAY.. From the news paper.. "The bar boasts a selection of 80 to 90 Scotches, a full cocktail menu and 32 draft beers - all imports and microbrews as the domestics are relegated to the "cooler in bottles." That Means Guinness at the Taps! (Irish or English, were lucky to get any, so I didn't ask.) Once into town the River was so high the Establishment across the way's Foundations were getting a wash job. (The Patrons looked happy, like they had a real Water Front View!) Across the river was the loud sounds of the Mill. In the Logging industry here, that is the sound of "Paid Rent and full tummies". (First Photo-River/Foundations.) Across the way FRED'S I went in and asked if I could Photo the Place and got an ok and a reference to the Article Below. Ordered a sampler of Six Beers.$12! and proceeded to Photo and drink them. I had expected to get them one at a time. He Poured six at once...... Now I couldn't let them go all flat and warm.... So I shot Photos with the Beers back-lit and sampled and shot and samlped and sampled and saaamlpd and Shot! And not done yet I ordered FOOD. (Cajon Gumbo! OK I saved My favorite for Dinner; (Mack and Jacks) a Thick and Spicy Gumbo..) But I ran out of "Mack's" and remembering all my Britt's and the "Oxey Thread" Entry.-Anglo American Beer.- (That was a VERY funny one.) AND remembering 'they were sentiments of my Dear Team MATE! frans6nl'. I Ordered a Half and Half. -Of course the Blessed Liquid, - and for it to Nestle Atop... -Our Local Nut Brown Ale "RiverTown Brown" ANYWAY... The List of Beers he picked for me with a note. Hale's -Hale's Cream Ale-.. Has the creamy texture of a Mexican Beer with a light bite. like a flat but creamy IPA or as Described by my server a "Euro version of a cream ale." Nitrogen Gassed Kegs! next Maritime Pacific -Clipper- Decreasingly Cloudy Blond with a very pleasant after taste. (High Hubba Octane Hubba!) Truly a Golden Hefeweizen! and Mac & Jacks -African Amber- This is a (Dry Hopped) densely cloudy amber that I love. No bad hangovers and my darts are as crappy as usual! I saved it for the Food. Then Maritime Pacific's "Christmas Ale" -Jolly Roger- I wanted to try this back around Christmas but was always out! A sweet and mild Ale with just a hint of smoke in the after... The "One/Won" of the "Sampler" that I thought was the Tastiest. (9% Too) followed by The House Ale -Rivertown Brown- Smooth ans sweet with a Bitter second hit and a light nutty imprint afterwards. Actually it was a surprise when I Tested it in the in the sampler. Description- Strongly Yummy. Last (and least) Deschutes -Black Butte Porter!- A commercial Beer that is black and thick. Not Bad. Good warm. All this and Photos of the Tap row and the Beautiful Scotch Bottles, Row after Golden Row! All around the top of the walls are Tap Heads and there is a sign to show the Counties the Scotch Originates from. I was going to write more but needed to get photos Becuse I got to buzzed at the next joint and gave (after doing some Photos for them) the Disk away to a Birthday Party. Big Opps! Oh well the Review in the Paper was as better anyway.. H e r e s t h e l i n k . Or Google- "Freds Rivertown Ale House" I'm bummed about the Pics but I guess I could go back and try again If You Guys Want! I mean if you want... Embarrassed for me? LOL ....AHhhh Better Sorry I just keep wanting to do another Sampler! (With Photos for the Strange Hobby thread) Hay Now! It's a strange Hobby to Photo Beers!) Or maybe do a Post on the Wonderful Belgian Beers they sell! Yum! Yum! (on Tap of Course) Beer is an open theam so feel free to wander around in here! We haven't gotten any posts on Beer Fun! Ok Guys and Gals;
I haven't had what I would call an excellent Ale or Stout in - seems like ages - at least a couple of weeks. I'm looking for recommendations - of widely distributed varities or if you know of an outstanding local brand please name it and the place it may be acquired - one can never tell when / where one may wind up. |
