Howdie from Boy Scout Camp Ransburg.... Rick -- Checked out the web site for Ransburg. Looks like a nice place to be under canvas! Most of the summer camping I did with my scouts was at Owasippee (run by Chicago Area Council) in northern Michigan. I also spent a couple of summers at Camp Kishwaukee In Illinois, but our council had to sell it as there just wasn't enough money to keep it going. I did do my OA ordeal there. What a mess that was -- had to clean up after the dining hall burned to the ground (arson). I was black from top to bottom after that. Pulled a joke on the troop on a weekend campout. It was St. Patrick's Day and I dumped green food coloring in the pancake batter -- LOL. I think a couple of them almost got sick. That summer, the sun coming through the dining fly made the pancakes look green again. Thought they were going to string me up that time! |

Gotta love a Scout Camp with WiFi -- things have progressed since my days as a Scoutmaster! Thanks Dave.... but not WiFi, and aircard - works like hooking up to your cell phone, not to bad speed either, a little faster than 56kb modem. I've the lappy with for doing the troop advancement, with 80 scouts camping this week - its almost a must to keep all of it in order. My OS is in the troop and I'm the Advancement Chair, I'm actually a Cubsmaster for my YS pack.......... . Ransburg is a great place to spend a week under canvas, for the kids - I on the other hand like my creature comforts in my old age - IE. Queen sized air mattress, A/C for nice new tent, and the lappy. Green food coloring in anything adds a bit of fun, and mix it with red and every thing comes out a nice deep purple . If your interested I'll give you the secret recipe for making bug juice that has the color of used motor oil @ Charles..... Bite me, and BTW adding a can of Sprite to a dump cake in the dutch oven is a fantastic idea, and here's another - add .24 tsp white pepper, .25 tsp black pepper, and .25 cayenne pepper to the mix. The pepper adds a little zing, without being over powering..... |

Rick --
80 kids camping! Outstanding! Never had a troop that big to work with. About the largest we had was about 30. Sounds like you do have the creature comforts. About the only comfort I had was my own spacious (8X10) tent when the kids were in camp provided tents with wood pallet floors. Spent a good deal of time under canvas those years. At least 2 nites a month on troop campouts (winter months included), a week of summer camp and usually 3 weeks with the family camping on vacation. Worked out to be about 2 months a year camping. I have 4 sons, so I spent about 12 years as a scouter. At one point, all 6 of us in the family were registered with scouting. Don't think I need the motor oil bug juice recipe. I think I had a few gallons of that myself -- LOL. |
