Hello,
I recently, (late April), moved here from the UD/Oxford Chem. projects as they were dying. Since this was almost the same client and was recommended by User Friendly.com I moved over here. Of late, (maybe the past two weeks), my clients have been hanging at the end or beginning of a work unit, I don't know which. On the machine that I use myself, I check it occasionally and find the little message to click here for a message in the lower part of the client window. It then mentions that it is repeatedly crashing and to scan for viruses, etc. As soon as I click off the little message box, it immediately takes off and begins a new work unit. I am running all projects, so I don't know if it is a particular project or general. Yesterday I noticed that my wife's computer had not turned in a work unit in 14 days, I checked it and it was hung the same way. I had thought that my laptop did this due to loss of the wireless connection, but it occurs with my hard wired machines as well. Currently running different virus soft ware in my machines, but, I've found no viruses for quite a while and do regular updates. |

Continuation of initial post: Two machines on Win XP, patched to current with ZA firewalls, one machine Win 2K, patched to current with ZA firewall as well. Cable connection through router, nothing special or tricky. Everything else seems pretty stable and solid. They usually get rebooted when windows update requires it, otherwise, not. I only had similar occurrences on grid.org when the servers or internet connection had problems. When they happened it would resume on its own when the condition was corrected. This seems to lock up the client until it has manual intervention. That is rather inefficient on 24/7 machines that may not be touched for 7 days or longer. Any help?

You may want to visit the Start Here forum's Anti virus and Firewall post. ZA amongst does not get an honourable mention.
----------------------------------------What is/are the exact message(s)? The client is no different.... eventually it will try again, but if work gets trashed, the pause may be getting longer, to prevent the client to cycle thru lots of jobs ending in error. If not done already, you may need to train ZA the friend and foe thing about the 3 components a UD (or BOINC) process consists of. Those are mentioned with detail names in a Start Here forum post on Agents, Projects Versions and Processes , but in a nutshell UD.exe, UD_xxxxx.exe and wcgxxxxxxx.exe need to have exemption.

Hi zorkon ii.
Please will you look up the Device ID for your and your wife's machines. It is on the configuration screen of the UD agent. With that information, the techs will be able to check exactly what sort (and frequency) of errors you are returning, and hopefully we can solve this. My personal recommendation is to switch to BOINC. There's a quick guide to migration here: http://www.wcgwiki.org/en/boinc/migration.cfm |

What is/are the exact message(s)? I'm afraid that I'll have to wait for another hang to answer that one, exactly. The client is no different.... eventually it will try again. Maybe, but two weeks seems to be similar enough to infinity in computer time as to be of little difference. To my knowledge, I've never denied it access through a firewall popup. I have now given all UD_xxxxx.exe programs in my program list access rights to the internet, I can find little or no sign of the wcgxxxxxxx.exe ever trying to access the net. |

Oh Great Leader of the UFies,
If I have to move to boinc, so be it, I'll give it a try. However, UD agent did manage to crank out over 9 years of mostly uneventful computer time on it's previous version for me, it seems odd that it can't anymore in this version. The device ID's are 570781 and 571806. Thank you for your service to us noobs and to research. Mikey |

Is no problem.
I think BOINC is much better, and if you happen to have a spiffy dual core machine, then it's vital you use BOINC. Anyway, I'll point the techs your way, and hopefully they can narrow down the UD problem. |

I assume that you have not installed WCG UD in the same directory that contained grid.org UD. Artifacts remaining could cause problems with slightly different UD versions.
----------------------------------------If you're moving to BOINC, it wouldn't matter. Now back to our regularly scheduled message, testing whether there could be a firewall or virus program problem.

The other standard thing to check is DEP (Data Execution Prevention) but the mix of operating systems affected makes this a very remote possibility.

Didactylos,
What, you mean there is a difference between NT 5.0 and NT 5.5 other than the user interface? (and I suppose, IPv6 support) Unfortunately, no, there are no multicore puppies here as of yet. If it could be done without having to upgrade graphics card, memory, mobo, AND processor, probably would have done it by now. retsof, It's residing in Program files\World Community Grid folder. Before Grid.org died, I had not heard of World Community Grid, so it must be in a new directory. |
