Re: Screensaver mode

The below is a check in note for BOINC, just to convey that the developers are working on dealing with the phenomena:
If screensaver launched BOINC, don't stop running when energy saver puts display to sleep

This line suggests that the BOINC screensaver is able to launch the client as per what Didactylos wrote earlier in this thread. Something to investigate or trial and error. I don't use screen-savers.... waste of cycles and generator of extra heat in the computer, particular of moving 3D.

Re: Screensaver mode

...another problem whether in Boinc, UD or screensaver is that when the WU finishes, the priority comes up to high and none of them want to release, thereby causing son to get very irritated and saying, rightly, that claims that it all runs in the background and is TOTALLY non-intrusive is a downright lie! wink

Re: Screensaver mode

If running in BOINC, I might suggest what I do here. The wife complains about the same thing...high priority on the network when uploading/downloading workunits.

While she's messing around with morning activities, I send in the day's work. After that, I can change the button to "network activity suspended". The workunits are then free to pile up at low priority until I decide to send them in again. This works best with a 2-4 day queue.

True...that's what the add-on UDMonitor should be for, managing multiple UD units.

I don't want to do that much babysitting any more.

General comment: UDMonitor works the same way with WCG UD as it did with grid.org UD. You just have to start it with the WCG bat file.

Re: Screensaver mode

I don't want to babysit either, and if they did what they claim - background only and NO IMPACT on normal use, I would not have to. But both BOINC and UD agent will interfere with my son's gaming.

If they claim not to interfer then they SHOULD NOT interfere....but they do!

Re: Screensaver mode

BOINC can throttle network activity. I haven't used the throttle myself, and you need 5.8 or higher for it to work.

Project choice is significant, too. While the crunching doesn't actually interfere, some projects have high-ish memory use. This is only an issue when you are doing other memory intensive tasks (such as gaming, I imagine).

Since this has been identified as an issue, the upcoming BOINC version enforces memory restrictions - separate restrictions for idle and simultaneous crunching. This should take care of memory management, so long as you pick sensible limits.

Re: Screensaver mode

The biggest problem I have is that the last time there was a 'clash' and a 'memory problem' the end rersult was that my son had to reload his game from scratch - losing something like 3 weeks of conquoring the World and starting again. With these circumstanstes he will NOT allow any erxperimentation or tweaking in case it does it again. His statement is along the lines of you are lying to me by saying it is non-intrusive, it is intrusive, period....

With these conditions I have to try and work round it. I thought I had it cracked by running it as a screensaver UD Agent version but sod's law had it in the middle of an upload/download when he tried to use the PC and it would not come out of screensaver and he had to manually re-boot the PC to get on.....not a happy bunny!

Re: Screensaver mode

Many games run at an intense machine level. Twisted0n3 has trouble with about every game and forum I've seen him on, and there are many, with an attitude to match. Google for "twisted0n3".

Could it be that some games leave the computer in a gunked up condition, making it difficult for anything else (that may ordinarily be well behaved)?
