Son will NOT let me experiment....all the .scr files on sons machine and on this machine are in the same place....it works fine on this machine but not on the sons.....

Just remove the BOINC Manager shortcut from startup, and exit it. Then set your screensaver to BOINC.

I think that works.

Naw......if Boinc is not running and screensaver comes on it says Boinc is not running. You have to have boinc running all the time. All the screensaver mode does is bring up the science pane to jump round the screen.

The game to give the big problems with Boinc is Medieval II, Total War.

If you can't get the UD screen-saver to work, revisit BOINC Profile preference settings (if you feel adventurous):

Processor Usage
Do work while computer is in use? No
Do work only after computer is idle for: 15 minutes

You have to set the screen-saver to a time longer than the idle time as that has caused issues.

Not knowing the RAM size, also tweak these 2 settings, which presently can only be individually controlled in the global_prefs_override.xml (5.10 final release will have these options in a preference screen)

<global_preferences>
   <ram_max_used_busy_pct>50.000000</ram_max_used_busy_pct>
   <ram_max_used_idle_pct>90.000000</ram_max_used_idle_pct>
</global_preferences>

These should by approximation stop any interference with gaming, particular if you set the profile preference "Leave applications in memory while preempted?" No

OK let me get this straight.

1. Do work while computer is in use? No
2. Do work only after computer is idle for: 10 minutes
3. Leave in memory when pre-empted No
4. Set Monitor to standby 5 minutes.

I think screensaver is irrelevent and need not be used as it does not invoke the program which has to be running for it to work.

Under these circumstances with the game running but not 'active' Boinc can surely still come in, load RAM and then give RAM back when the game is 'played'.....correct?

Looking at the way the game is played by my son, when he 'pauses' and does not 'play' the screensaver/monitor to standby is NOT invoked. The game just 'sits' there on screen - has the screensaver etc been automatically disabled by the game? Would this also count as being 'in use' for Boinc? Maybe this is where it goes wrong and screws up if it does not count as being 'in use' and Boinc starts up in the middle of the 'paused' game?

After many test the situation appears to be -

1. If Monitor goes into standby before screensaver is invoked, screensaver does not run.

2. If screensaver comes on before monitor into standby, everything is fine.

3. If both are set to the same time delay then it appears to be fine, but without many many tests it is not possible to say it will work everytime.

Best method get the screensaver running before monitor goes into standby....why this should be so I do not know unless it is deliberate in the Display setting of Control Panel....but there is no warning there...

good.... at least it confirms what i read many timesand wrote in my first post in this thread.... you don't say which client was tested, but presume it to be ol' WCG agent still.
