My son who has a machine with XP professional allows the UD version to run in screensaver mode only. However it does not seem to run at all in that mode, no increase in CPU time or percentage after a couple of hours when it should have run.
Screensaver mode is set to come on after 10 minutes, and monitor power save is set to 6 minutes. It used to work ok in that mode with grid, but cannot get it to work with WCG....thoughts? |

I tried a few things and as it was just finishing a job, changed the profile to force a different project to see if i could replicate:
----------------------------------------1. In the Screensaver setting screen of Windows, does the test button bring up the screensaver? 2. Does the little preview window show the WCG logo bouncing? 3. What project do you have the phenomena Not interested in what 'worked' as grorg.... that was science over 3 years old without change. 2. Yes 3. Genome, but have forced a change to folding to see if any diff. Cannot check at the moment but will let you know. If still same next test will be to stop the monitor going into standby and letting the screensaver display....will not be for some hours though.... |

hmmm, just happened to switch from a HCMD job to a GC job. Setting it to 1 minute works. The screensaver time is shorter than the energy saving setting. Purportedly that could impact the screensaver mode, though not knowing why it would.... what's the point of a screensaver if the energy saving switch kills the monitor completely and loose several percentage points of crunching power. More insights: Can you explain the screen saver? (for the none initiated if they read this).
----------------------------------------Noted, that in the period when there was no actual science running the WCG logo and WCG name appeared in place of the science. Soon as the new job came up the new science popped too. Tough this may not get you further, did put copies of all the *.scr files into the Windows directory. Potentially there is a grorg legacy file in the windows dir.... the one used by WCG is ud_1582754.scr. The instruction in this help text discusses the installation of UD.scr. I did same on the bolded and repeated the exercise from first reply and got it to work.

On all other machines I run Boinc...however Boinc interfers with son's gaming, esp when it finished a WU. I found with Grid that the only way that does not interfere with son & his games is to run in screensaver mode only...which of course Boinc does not do, therefore I am stuck with UD agent on that machine or nothing at all...and it must run in screensaver....will have more time to mess with it tomorrow if the folding WU is the same as he will be at work....rest of today is out, gametime!

OK ran a test with just the screensaver enabled, not the monitor in standby. When the screensaver starts it is just the WCG logo bouncing around, there is no science pane displayed. Yet when I turn off run as screensaver it starts running immediately.....

Did it on a second machine run UD+HCMD and used the WCG install method (right click on the ud_1582754.scr file and install). Set to 1 minute and using the Screensaver option in Agent and 'apply' brought it up as expected.

Scribe, what makes you say BOINC doesn't work in screensaver mode? You can just run the screensaver, or you can configure BOINC to only run when idle.

Configuring Boinc to run only when idle REALLY screwed up the game, caused crashes and memory corruption....

Oh dear.
That shouldn't happen, obviously. What game is it? Have you tried duplicating the problem recently? If it's a reproducible problem, then I'm sure the BOINC developers would like to know about it. |
