Re: Who should *not* use BOINC?

I have BOINC running on several PIII's of various flavors with no problems. Running windows 2000. They mostly run with the monitor disconnected so graphics are not an issue. They run at minmum of 640 X480.

Cheers

Re: Who should *not* use BOINC?

Sekerob,
From everything I read since I joined this forum, in the feature line "Upgrades" for UD I think you could replace "Infrequent" by "Never", or at least "Very unlikely". smile

The comment in "Future Projects" is good news.

Cheers. Jean.

Re: Who should *not* use BOINC?

When the new cancer project gets up and running in a few weeks time
did i miss something? i read the last update in cancer and i don't see anything about any project yet.
Nothing has started, but we think that some kind of cancer thingy will get going this summer. MANY of y'all have been waiting for something else that's cancer related. Just crunch what we've got. The current phase of HCMD is finishing up. Something else.

Re: Who should *not* use BOINC?

All you grid.org types will find this strange, but WCG don't officially announce new projects until they actually launch. That's mostly because the launch date is never fixed - it's always "when the techs are darned sure it's ready".

That said, the CAs have a peek into the pipline, and we can sometimes pass on tantalising tidbits. Also, those who participate in the beta project (BOINC only) usually get a bit of a hint of what is coming.

Re: Who should *not* use BOINC?

Sekerob's post with the copy of the BOINC/UD comparison table, posted 30 May, says most of it, but I'd like to emphasise a couple of points:

- BOINC has "work buffering", that is, it downloads and keeps a queue of new work-units on your computer, waiting to be crunched. This is almost ESSENTIAL if you have an INTERMITTENT (DIAL-UP) NET CONNECTION, and even if you have broadband, it keeps your computer crunching if the project server(s) are temporarily down. UD only downloads 1 new work-unit when the previous one has finished.

- If you have MULTI-CORE computer(s) and you want to crunch with more than 1 core, you must use BOINC.

If you really have to have sexier graphics, then UD may be for you.

I wonder whether when WCG developed their current website policy of steering new Windoze crunchers onto UD they were worried that advocating BOINC would leak crunchers to non-WCG projects. WCG, with BOINC, you might gain more than you lose. Swings and roundabouts ...

Re: Who should *not* use BOINC?

Strange how a lot of the answers say WHY you should use Boinc, when the original question called for reasons NOT to use Boinc....just shows how many people actually read and comprehend questions..... wink

OK, you wanted it. It's because people here do not like to be negative (you are allowed to not believe that smile ). So let's be "positive":

People who hate changing their habits for using a new better tool should definitely stay away from BOINC. Especially if they also prefer to migrate in a hurry when their old beloved tool is finally discontinued instead of doing it quietly in advance.

Is it OK this way? smile
Jean.

No, it's because Lawrence covered the downsides in the very first reply. There's really nothing else to add (but that didn't stop the thread drifting off topic, as threads so often do.

Re: Who should *not* use BOINC?

Strictly speaking I've not found a single 'must' reason *not* to use BOINC, but the BOINC throttle, that could nerve a person on a puter that has an excessively fast responding fan throttle, which is more likely to exist in a laptop.... and even that can be countered with a 3rd party throttle tool, leaving no single *not* from my perspective going forward.

Re: Who should *not* use BOINC?

It could potentially damage the fan. WCG have put in a request to improve the BOINC throttle in the next version, but it still won't be as good as WCG's own throttle.

edit: and the workaround, of course, is to set the throttle to 100% (or try it at 50%, which gives the fastest CPU cycling and should hopefully allow the fan to run at a constant speed).
