Who should *not* use BOINC?

When the new cancer project gets up and running in a few weeks time, I have a decision to make. To BOINC or not to BOINC, that is the question.

I know the members who are BOINCing love it... just absolutely love it. But I also know that there are downsides to everything. A lot of times, the downsides are minimal, or the downsides are offset by the upsides. What are the downsides to BOINC (even the minimal ones)?

I have yet to see anything that is perfect for everybody. With that in mind, I am pretty positive that BOINC is not for everyone. Who should *not* use BOINC?

Re: Who should *not* use BOINC?

BOINC has a very clunky throttle. Somebody who has to run slowly to keep their laptop from overheating will prefer the UD client, unless they are willing to master the intricacies of ThreadMaster. Also, BOINC can be slow to shut down. (This seems to be version dependent, and might change again with the 5.10 release.)

BOINC requires more choices during installation.

Personally I think the graphics for the UD client are better eye candy.

Just about everything else is equal or in BOINC's favor.

Re: Who should *not* use BOINC?

To BOINC or not to BOINC, that is the question.
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take UD against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural points
That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub;
For in that sleep of death what crunch may come
When we have shuffled off this mortal team,
Must give us pause: there's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life;
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
The oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
The pangs of despised love, the points's delay,
The insolence of adminstrators and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscover'd country from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all;
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pith and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action. - Soft you now!
The fair Ophelia! Deb, in thy orisons
Be all my sins remember'd.

Re: Who should *not* use BOINC?

You already know how UD works. The one here is slightly different, but processes the same.

Try BOINC for a bit. You can leave both BOINC and UD installed. Take whatever one you aren't using out of the startup. Just crunch SOMETHING and find your sea legs. When cancer comes along, just switch to it and keep at it.

You're crunching NOTHING? Alas, poor Yorick.

Re: Who should *not* use BOINC?

I have a couple of older computers with ATI All-in-wonder or Radeon cards and I seem to have a problem running BOINC on them. In one case, a machine that is only (yeah, ONLY - ha) a few years old - a 2 gigahertz pentium with ATI all-in-wonder - I managed to get boinc running by using a basic win xp screen saver instead.

I might be able to get boinc going on the other 3 machines also, but since they're single core, I haven't really had the incentive.

BOINC runs fine on the newer machines - Intel 3 ghz and AMD 2+ gigahertz - except for one machine. But in that case I'm almost positive that the problem is not with boinc since it is all-round flaky. However I WAS able to get UD running.

If you're not looking for a lot of control or work unit info out of whatever agent you use and you're not a stats addict, I would have to say that in my personal experience, the UD agent seems to be more trouble-free.

Re: Who should *not* use BOINC?

I use boinc on my 400Mhz winbloz laptop, my 1.8Ghz PPC mac, my 2.4Ghz Linux box, my 2.8Ghz dual zeon HP winbloz workstation and every other few dozen pc's I have on the WCG. I see no reason to use the UD client, ever. IMHO

Screensavers slow down processing the work (more so on older machines) so I do not use the boinc screensaver on any machine, they are all set to go blank screen after 1 min. There have also been a few instances on some projects where the screensaver locks up the machine so unless you really really want to look at it don't bother.

Re: Who should *not* use BOINC?

The BOINC graphics is being totally rewritten for BOINC 6.0. I'm hoping this will solve dozens of the graphics related issues at a stroke.

Re: Who should *not* use BOINC?

The http://www.WCGwiki.org/en has a comparative table of the 2 agents, which is expanded below. BOINC has now on Windows, full graphics and throttle AND opposed to UD will have new projects from the get go. On next web-update UD is moved in the join/install page to lowest position on the download page.... if that's not tell tale!

Oh and reinstalling or upgrading BOINC over an existing install will not create yet another device! I got as many BOINC devices and PC's running BOINC.
