Hey all,
After frustratingly realised that UD has been shut down without sending prior notice to members so that those out there who still run that program wouldn't waste their computer resources running defunct researches, I have decided to hop over to WCG. The process of signing up for an account and setting up a profile is easy, but when I launch the agent, it wouldn't connect to the Internet, saying that "Unable to connect to the Grid server, please try again. If you are using a proxy server, please verify the settings with your network administrator". My computer is connected directly to the Internet, so there isn't a need to double check proxy settings. I experience the same issue on my home computer, so I am sure it has nothing to do with my connection. Could someone please guide me what has gone wrong? Cheers :) P.S. Was UD just a PoC? |

Have you totally uninstalled the grid.org agent and installed the WCG agent? They aren't compatible, and a few people have had issues transitioning.
If you were successfully running the grid.org agent previous to this, then it is almost certain that this is the problem. You may also have to set your security software to allow WCG net access. |

Hey, thanks for the prompt reply.
Yes, I have totally uninstalled grid.org agent before installing WCG agent. I have tried disabling my firewall (which is the only real security software that could potentially interfere with the connection), but to no avail. After uninstalling grid.org agent, I didn't run any grid.org tasks anymore. Cheers :) |

Even if you have uninstalled it properly, it may have left some parts behind. Yes, the UD agent is AWFUL. Sorry.
Quick fix: switch to BOINC. Instructions are here: http://www.wcgwiki.org/en/boinc/migration.cfm For a fix of the WCG UD agent, try removing all traces of the grid.org agent. Delete the folder C:\Program Files\United Devices and everything in it. |

Hmmm, BOINC. How does that defer from the conventional WCG agent?

BOINC supports multiple processors, and has better error reporting, work queuing, and lots of advanced features.
The Linux and Mac agents are BOINC, and WCG will shortly be making BOINC their recommended agent for Windows, too. |

Hmmm, BOINC. How does that defer from the conventional WCG agent? BOINC has many features that are superior to the UD agent if you ask me. BOINC will queue jobs, unlike the UD agent (you can change in your profile how many days worth of work you want to queue up), if you are running a machine with hyperthreading or multiple cores then BIONC will utilize all those cores, where UD only utilizes one. And best of all BOINC seems to be far more stable and reliable than UD. You can use the same screen name that you have set up for WCG so all your points will transfer over. You can also view the status of your jobs in the "Results Status" section of the website, so if you have a machine returning bad results then it is easier to see this. For me the main advantage is the queueing of jobs. Some of my computers at work lose internet connection over the weekends, so if that happens when the machines finish the current job they set it aside and start up the next one, then when there is internet connectivity it will send in all completed jobs and request more. Hope this helps. |

Hi jameskan,
If you want to experiment with BOINC, the instructions are here: http://www.wcgwiki.org/en/boinc/migration.cfm Lawrence |

Okay, I am downloading BOINC agent as I am typing now. A few questions regarding grid.org and WCG:
1) HPF Phase 1, which was done by grid.org, was it a real research, or was it a just proof of concept that distributed computing can be done? I reckon it is very very rude of grid.org not notifying its members prior to its shutdown. 2) WCG - this is real serious researches right? Cheers :) |

Hi jameskan,
----------------------------------------On HPF1 and what happened 'there': A separate thread in the Chat Room with the title ".... What Happened" exists there. We run HPF2, which is an evolution of HPF1. Protein Folding prediction is an ever refining art, the current one at atomic level. What we do here is real real and applied. HPF1 Main paper is on the way. and the Yeast one which started the querying at Grorg, was published about 2-3 months ago. Help Defeat Cancer just finished and has immediate application in medicine and build a knowledge base / digitized diagnostics database with almost immediate real life application in cancer diagnostics and associated 'best treatment'. We're standing by for the scientists to make the final posts in the HDC forum on the outcome and the road forward. 2 more cancer projects are to start this year and are going to run probably at some point side by side when the second one is launched. The next FightAIDS phase is starting most probably around middle June. And proof of concept.... balony.... that was established a few years ago. BOINC is the evolution which is the open source - free access - software that can run and manage almost any distributed computing project. WCG simply used UD to kickstart in Nov.04 and shortly after launched BOINC to run on other platforms and relatively easily ported to many operating systems. Anyway on Grorg, join in the chat room as it has no business here in the WCG support fora. Let us know how you get along with BOINC. ttyl Sekerob
