How close is this project to completion? I remember reading something about July being the target completion date. With the influx of Grid.org crunchers, I figured that the project would speed up. Does anyone know if this is so?

I've noticed that WU's are taking almost double the time to run. Can I assume these are part of Phase 2, or is it just me?
If we're in Phase 2, then I can also assume that we're not that close to completion? I think these issues are related... |

Yes we are in Phase II. Looks like the status graph has been updated. We're 48% of the way through the whole project, and 24% of the way through Phase II

I've noticed that WU's are taking almost double the time to run. ... Has anyone else noticed that there is a huge inconsistency in the amount of time it takes to complete some of the current work units? I've had some that take well under an hour (in fact some been close to 1/2-hr), one that just completed took 5 hours, 7 minutes(!), and the current one I'm working on will complete in about 1 hr, 50 minutes. Computer usage for other work has been about the same as usual; certainly nothing that would interfere with this job completing. I'm not complaining, just curious. ![]() ![]() "Everything in moderation, including moderation" -- Mark Twain |

We are working on all sorts and sizes of proteins from Swiss-Prot and other databases. So there will be a wide variety. Over all, yesterday's results took only 2 hours and 4x minutes as compared with the long-term average of 3 hours and 43 minutes. So about an hour faster.

I'd do more, but there's a 50/day quota. When the quota kicks in, my queue usually gets pulled down to nothing before new workunits are downloaded (or time passes 0000 UTC to start on the next day's quota).
----------------------------------------I have seen variations from 30 minutes to over 5 hours on what used to take a little over an hour on earlier ones on this particular computer.

What have you got running there in triple OC mode retsof, as the quota is 'per core'.
----------------------------------------One of the reasons why WCG increased the due date from 7 to 9 days was to counter some of the tasks buffering issues with 5.8 which even exists on in the latest alphas. Message 10281 - Posted 16 May 2007 13:35:28 UTC There are still issues with the scheduler on multiple CPU systems where it doesn't get work for the other cores when a project is having deadline trouble. This is a known problem and hopefully JM7 changes to the algorithm that will be implemented in the next release will address some of this. Boinc continues to evolve and address issues as they become more bothersome and rise to the top of the todo list.

No single computer here usually sends 50 units per day. HOWEVER, I had no connection at all one day last week. I recently sent two days of work in in one day. It could have been just after that when the quota message was seen since many workunits were sent in at once.
----------------------------------------I woke up this morning to find one offline computer empty. I connected and gave it something to do. The next message in that thread was also interesting. OK, the primary goal is to not report work late. The goal of keeping the CPU busy is of much lower priority. therefore, the CPU scheduler is working correctly as designed. Work has to be finished before the connection before it is actually due. This might be as long as connect every X before the report deadline. The scheduler also to ensure that the task is not actually processing at the time of the connection - hence the slop factors of one day and project switch interval. the rr simulator also takes into account the estimated processing time remaining on all tasks. Slop factor. A BOINC scheduling design feature?

Think it's a particular US idiom, but it has been build into the Work Fetch algorithm since quite some time, albeit qualified in different words. Kathryn I think is an English teacher, so she could tell.... Anyway, have used the factor in business planning to add extra extra padding so, once one layer of padding was removed during review, got the plan approved I wanted, so it could be outperformed after removing the second layer, but that's seriously off-topic

Progress should be about 31% by last night for phase II. Periodic official Status report is published here: http://www.dbbm.fiocruz.br/labwim/bioinfoteam...eComparison/progress.html
