I shut down my system at the end of the day to save oil and not pump CO2 into the atmosphere. It on all day though, while I work.

The best way to kill both birds with 1 stone is to upgrade and drop your flops/kw rating. But this is for people that have strings of very old machines.
----------------------------------------Please understand, it is not how much crunch. It's that you do. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

It's that you do. For people who are crunching at home only, you're right. If you can afford to, upgrade the hardware & crunch more per watt of electricity used/paid for. For someone who is using business machines that are left on 24/7 anyway, and on a 4 year replacement cycle, hardware upgrades have to be justified for the bigger picture. The P4's that I use work perfectly for everything they are required to do to keep the business operating. Making them more efficient per watt isn't an issue because they are 'fast enough' for their intended purpose. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

yes, your server farm is well up to speed. and since you dont need the power to run basic applications that the dealers need, there is little need to upgrade. The machines I point at is people more like myself really.
----------------------------------------I live on SSA, so have time to flip together machines out of nothing. People throw stuff at me all the time. I rebuild and ship out to others on any type of disability. But the machines are slow. They email and surf but little more. The cut-off line is 500mhz right now. above that i power it here for now. Im looking at upgrading a pure grid server to lower my power bill by combining 3 500mhz systems decomisioning, and bring them back as one duo. This way i get more bang for my buck and save money that would make the upgrade cost effective. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

To build a screamer is still expensive. With what I consider to be the MS Vista fiasco, we will be putting off hardware upgrades, probably a year beyond original expectations. Since most new machines come with Vista, we are going to wait until at least SP1 before getting any new machines. We still have a few 'on the shelf' in case some of the existing machines die. Hopefully MS will fix Vista enough to make it worthwhile by then. Then we'll be upgrading to duos...I may try to sneak a quad onto my desk if prices are reasonable by then. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Others I know who haven't ever worked are on SSDI (same concept). How do you connect with other disabled people? Any groups, forums, blogs, etc. you would like to recommend? Maybe response should go in another thread - if you wan to respond - your call. I would be interested. Living in a large city, you probably have a lot more local options than I would but I'm interested in both online and real world connections. Thanks. ![]() ![]() |

Oh, hehe yes. The people that I want to reach dont have a computer to begin with so blogs and such dont help. But this area is filled with HUD facilities. I look for candidates from them by those where there is upward movement expected and would aid in their transition to mainstreaming.

I don't understand about HUD - do you volunteer somewhere?
----------------------------------------My list has never been formally completed. I'm not even sure what grounds were used to qualify me for SSD. A partial list is ADD, OCD, anxiety and depression. But I've know people with clinic depression and I've never been THAT bad off. I had encephalitis when I was very young. Since there were no treatments at the time (was viral), there was probably significant brain damage. Some of it healed because I was so young - like someone who has a stroke. So I have a lot of varied and inconsistent symptoms - similar to people who've had a traumatic brain injury. In my case, the damage seems to have been pretty uniform across the entire cerebral cortex. That's a big problem with getting treatment - it's hard to fix something that isn't there. Who says you can't get by with half a brain? Have you tried Minipress (prazosin) suppresses signals from the amygdala and is supposed to be very effective for people with PTSD. Beta blockers are also supposed to work. It's a blood pressure med but isn't much risk of causing low blood pressure. Is especially good if you have nightmares. Clozaril (clozapine) is also a good drug, but you need weekly blood work to avoid a potentially life threatening side effect. Good choice as a last resort though. ![]() ![]() |

I haven't turned my machines off yet but having 5 computers crunching in a 8'x12' room with no air conditioning is causing some heat issues now that summer is here. I've placed a fan in the window but it doesn't help much when it's 30C or higher outside.
