Re: Do you turn your system off?

In 8+ years of having a broadband connection, I haven't been hacked into yet.

Not that worried about hacking but the modem and mains adaptor are additional heat sources (4 of my pc's are in a fairly small room) but the main reason is some Boinc projects get very ratty if communication is allowed but they cannot connect, some "lock up" the machines or cause the client to lose contact with the wu's so Boinc shuts down. So I suspend network activity when out and as the machines are only running Boinc there would be no point in leaving the modem on (saves a few pence on the leccy bill as well)

I guess that may make sense for you.
Most of my home machines are used day in & day out and I have VOIP at home also. To have phone service, I have to leave the network connected.
I have the cable modem, two routers and an 8 port switch in my 8x8 office, as well as 2 desktop PCs.
The computers at the office are used mostly from 8-8, but our phone system/voicemail is all VOIP, so the network stays up 24/7.

Re: Do you turn your system off?

ahh flexi hours

that wonderfull concept of free time

the establishment of moral principles requires the abscence all pressure

n the removal of the familiar targets

resseting the moral compass needs to
be updated without the constraints

of the familiar

once that becomes a practiced precept you can begin to argue on the concept of quality time instead of overtime

thus stepping back from the rat race n begining to notice its obvious failings

the circle is then complete as your natural hughmanity asserts itself and finds that improving our lot is allso a full time equation

the irony is that this equation is only fullfilable by minds used to plenty of QUALITY time

so turn it off at night and your iron grip on the t\arget will not overkill your own efforts

4 10 other ways of improving our lot

Re: Do you turn your system off?

I've just got the one baby here crunching away and for most of the years at Grid Org it was on 24/7 to give an average daily rate of a bit over 22 hours.

So, same procedure here, just down for maintenance and if away from the house for more than a day. Of course, the monitor goes off when I'm not actually using the machine and that's where most of the power use goes.

Good point about UD Monitor. I used to have it working just to show me how long since the last save and try to hold a reboot until it came back to zero. Couldn't do it all the time but I reckoned every little helped.

Must download and get the thing working again.

Re: Do you turn your system off?

I leave my cable modem/router connection on all the time.
The router has a built in NAT firewall & all the machines use the Windows firewall as well.
In 8+ years of having a broadband connection, I haven't been hacked into yet.

As far as you know. If you don't subscribe to one of the credit alerting services there could be someone else out there using your identity and you wouldn't find out unless or until they did something untoward.

I know one person who sold their house and found out when they ran a credit report that someone else had a mortgage on their social security number.

You can get hacked without getting ripped off.

I work at a car dealership, so I pull my credit report through their system quarterly. Nothing shows that shouldn't.
I do have my bank and credit card sites saved as favorites, but I don't have the actual account numbers on the computer.
I doubt a hacker would find AuntMary06.jpg worth stealing.
